Throwback Thursday: Rainy Day K-Pop

Earlier this year, Throwback Thursdays featured some of our favorite acoustic tracks for those days filled with spring showers. But let’s face it, rainy days are year-round! Now that summer has rolled in, check out some of The Kraze’s recommendations for your rainy summer afternoons.

“소나기 (DOWNPOUR)” - I.O.I

I.O.I’s final single as a group was released in 2017 and titled “DOWNPOUR.” The emotionally-ridden song, written by SEVENTEEN’s WOOZI, depicts the story of the girls as they went from trainees to idols. Performed for the first and last time at their TIME SLIP concert, “DOWNPOUR” is a song that promises happiness will find the members again once the rain ends. Fortunately for I.O.I and fans alike, the clouds will be clearing soon; the group is set to have a reunion in October.

“Love Rain” - YUJU feat. SURAN

Summer 2018 saw a collaboration between GFRIEND’s YUJU and R&B singer SURAN in the form of “Love Rain.” The track is on the jazzier side compared to the majority of GFRIEND’s releases, which truly allows YUJU to experiment with her voice. SURAN’s jazzy breakdown mid-way through the song highlights YUJU’s talents as a vocalist even further, with SURAN’s almost raspy crooning acting as the perfect complement to YUJU’s deeper tones. SURAN herself has the perfect voice for a song about rain, but it’s even better when she’s paired with YUJU.

“빗소리 (Rain Sound)” - B.A.P

Released as a pre-release single off their second mini-album ONE SHOT, B.A.P’s “Rain Sound” is the epitome of heartbreak circa 2013 K-Pop. Though the vocal line is nothing short of impressive, it’s really Yongguk and Zelo who shine in this song, with their verses having just the right amount of bitterness for someone scorned by love. Between the rap verses and the song’s acoustic guitar hook and desperate vocals, “Rain Sound” is the perfect pop track for those suffering from a broken heart.

“비가 오는 날엔 (On Rainy Days)” - BEAST

In 2011, BEAST released “On Rainy Days” as a track off their Fiction and Fact album. Compared to some of the group’s harder-hitting discography, this track is certainly on the softer side, with the music riding on the group’s light vocals and acoustic guitar. The rap verses in this track are just as soothing, making this song the ideal soundtrack for any...rainy day.
