B-Sides: ONEUS 1st Anniversary Special

A rookie group of six, ONEUS formed under RBW Label and has been one of the most prominent K-Pop groups and many K-Poppers’ favorite of 2019. With January 9 marking the first debut anniversary of ONEUS, here we give you five handpicked B-sides to listen to this week.

“White Night”

This mellow R&B track is from the group’s second EP, RAISE US. The song is comforting for any listener who needs to feel at home during hard times. With gentle instrumentals, the group sings about being a companion during the dark and lonely nights. The song is subtle, being less catchy and more a solace track to be added to one’s playlist. The lyrics sing, “When the darkness swallows you, I’ll make a white night for you, like a sun that never sets. I give you bright light, don’t be afraid and give up,” assuring the fans to keep fighting.

“Red Thread”

The track “Red Thread” is from their debut album, LIGHT US. The song is another melody which sings about the strong bond shared between the group and their fans. With mellow vocals, the members sing about being destined to be together with their fans by a red thread. The lyrics unfold the complicated love story and finally agree with the fate that brings lovers together. As the lines sing, “It is just you for me,” the song binds the relationship of the listener with the members using a “red thread.”

“English Girl”

This peppy song from the album RAISE US is a fun song to listen to. The song addresses international fans who speak different languages. Through the song, the members express their feeling of being distant from their fans because of the language barriers, but soon they accept the fact that languages could never determine their love for their beloved fans. The chorus, “I can’t speak English well,” is actually adorable as the members confess. Personally, the song’s concept also reminded me of IN2IT’s single “Sorry for my English” during the listen.

“Plastic Flower”

The last song on this list is a peppy track from the group’s latest album, FLY WITH US. The song is both catchy and fun to listen to as the lyrics compare love with the relationship between a bee and a plastic flower. The rhythm is addictive as the listener is bound to sing along to the hooking parts from the very first listen. The lines emit positivity and take the mood to a lighter note and please the listener’s ears.
