DAWN Reminds Everyone Who He is in “DAWNDIDIDAWN”
“If you don’t know DAWN, Google it”
It has been almost a year since DAWN released his track “Money” and now he is back with his mini-album called DAWNDIDIDAWN. This is his first album release since his debut as a soloist under PNation last year. The title track also titled “DAWNDIDIDAWN” featuring PNation labelmate Jessi gives us a different look into DAWN as an artist.
The Song
The track has two main components that repeat through the song—the simple snapping percussion and the whistle based melody. His verses seem only to contain the snapping with the addition of light 808 sounds, which is also the case during Jessi’s verse. The chorus of the song features the whistle in addition to several other beats that go along with the repeated lyrics of “DAWNDIDIDAWN.” While the instrumental alone is enough to get you moving, the lyrics add a fun kick. DAWN manages to tie in two references, one where he name drops his CEO PSY with the line, “I may look weak but I’m psycho/ psycho like PSY Hyung,” and he also mentions his girlfriend HyunA with the line, “Bubble Pop Señorita always by my side.” Jessi’s verse directly name drops HyunA with the line, “HyunA told me make your booty drop.” The song has two lines that will be stuck in your head after the first listen, the chorus, “DAWNDIDIDAWN,” and Jessi’s line, “Hey DAWN what’s going on?”
The Music Video
The music video is simple yet makes a loud statement. First thing to take note of is the color palette. The whole music video set, the dancers, and even DAWN and Jessi are in shades of black and white. It makes it feel clean and chic without trying. The sets are bare with a few additions, a couch here or a statute there, but there really isn’t much else until Jessi’s part of the music video. In the center of the room, a marble cougar statue sits on a black table; it looks like it is chained to the table. And soon Jessi appears to take the place of the cougar, where she is holding the chains that once bound the cougar to the table. It’s a detail some may miss, but fans of Jessi will love the subtle tongue in cheek moment. A majority of the music video is filled with choreography scenes that show that although DAWN is no longer an idol band member, he still has the moves.
Final Thoughts
A stark difference from “Money,” DAWN shows that he is a very versatile artist. From the punchy lyrics to the chic set, it’s fair to say DAWN has found his new label to be a place for him to grow and develop into an even more talented performer.
