Throwback Thursday: Broadway Lights
Retro concepts are all the rage right now, but there’s a certain themed concept that can only be covered by the best of the best performers: Broadway! Requiring top-notch stage presence, unbeatable charisma, and infectious positivity, it’s no wonder musical theater concepts can be some of the most entertaining in K-Pop.
“You Don’t Love Me” - SPICA
SPICA’s 2014 release “You Don’t Love Me” is every musical theater enthusiast’s dream. Inspired by 1960s soul, the song shows the girls’ vocals at their best. With so much sass and character, the concept itself could’ve been pulled straight off a Broadway stage.
“RE-BYE” - Akdong Musician
Released on AKMU’s 2016 mini-album Spring, “RE-BYE” gets a little more meta with its theater concept. The video puts a film noir take on a legitimate Broadway concept, with the brother-sister duo sleuthing their way to centerstage.
“Piano Man” - MAMAMOO
The modern day queens of retro concepts, MAMAMOO released their second mini-album Piano Man in 2014. Invoking sounds from 1930s swing, the video takes place in a jazz bar with the four members adopting different roles as they try to win over the heart of the resident piano man.
“Something” - TVXQ
TVXQ’s “Something” from their 2014 album Tense pulls from 1950s big band influences. The heavy brass, swinging percussion, and overall organic instrumentation sets the song apart from its more electronically produced peers. In the video, the members play a couple of suave casanovas who do their best to seduce the apple of their eye.
