B-Sides: Stray Kids’ Hidden Gems (Anniversary Special)
It is still unbelievable that one of our favorite rookie boy groups, Stray Kids, are turning two on March 25! 2019 has been a blissful year for the group with their first music show win, high ranking in various music charts, and performing in different cities around the world. The journey also had a taste of hapless happenings, as former member Woojin decided to depart from the team due to personal reasons. Despite the trying times, the group kept their fans engaged with new projects and releases including their latest album, SKZ2020. Apart from their earworm singles, the group is known for the hidden gems they carry in their albums. Here are few of such tracks to enjoy during the anniversary celebration.
“Voices”
The first track in the list, “Voices,” is from the group’s second EP I am Who. The song sings about breaking free from the nagging inner voices speaking of doom and gloom. The song is built with eclectic instrumentals and passionate verses that can stimulate every listener to battle the downtrodden voices in their heads. The highlight of the piece is the chorus and lyrics, “Step out of them voices. I’ll cover my ears and shout out again. Step out of their voices. Break free from the voices in my head,” as it empathizes with every individual’s struggle with negative self-talk. Complementing the beautiful lyrics, the music is also equally catchy and gets stuck in the head after the very first listen.
“Question”
The second EP is all about the group’s quest to find themselves as they try finding answers to the unanswered questions. “Question” is another version of “Voices, ” but with more confidence and power. The song immediately begins as a banger as I.N demands, “Hey, tell me what you want.” With a high influence of swag-filled beats, the track is a catchy and fun to sing along with. The pre-chorus sings, “Inside my head too many questions, Just got me thinking what’s my question,” expressing the chaotic curiosity of the boys. With rapid verses and shout outs, the song dwells as a playlist entertainer that gives the rap line space to shine.
“Grow Up”
The track is taken from the group’s debut album I Am Not.”Grow up” is more like a comforting melody for a troubled heart.; the song sings about the slow and steady approach towards life. Despite not knowing who they are or what they need, the members still hope to find answers one day. The compassionate lyrics are sure to jerk the tears as the chorus sings, “If you fall back a little, just rest. You’re doing fine, when things are hard. I’ll run with you, don’t worry,” promising us for a better day tomorrow. Rather than being an escort, Stray Kids act as our travel buddy to find answers together and that is what makes them stand out from others.
“Maze of Memories”
“Maze of Memories” from the fourth EP Clé 1: Miroh focuses on the rage in being caught up in a confusing maze. The album being the first of their second trilogy series, Clé continues the quest yet with a different approach. The boys are half way through and are confident to face what lies next, yet it is not as easy as expected as dark pasts and self doubts haunt them. As Han raps, “my head is burning. Question marks filling me up, blaming myself. Now I’m running for an answer I can’t even see,” and Seungmin sings, “and so, should I give up. But really, can I give up,” the conflicts continue, but the climax puts an end as Seungmin continues, “But then again, no I shouldn’t give up. I feel it inside, don’t wanna give up.” Though the track sounds as a not so positive one, it depicts the reality of confusion and finally encourages with a slogan, “Never give up. Looking at tomorrow, running a bit more. Never give up.”
“My Side”
As mentioned before, Stray Kids are fellow seekers for answers and would love to look for life’s meaning along with their beloved STAY. The song from their third EP, I Am You, is set in different patterns that blend harmonious verses, rapid rap lines and electrifying instrumental interludes together as one. Being released around last year’s anniversary, the song addresses STAYs expressing their gratitude and promise of walking together towards the future. The entire song stays close to the fans’ heart as it is one of the inevitable tracks in the album with heartfelt lyrics. Whenever you feel you are the only one going through hard times always remember to tune in to this particular song to feel belonged and loved.
“You Can STAY”
“You Can STAY” is one of the group’s recent tracks from their final album of the Clé trilogy, Clé : LEVANTER. The song is yet another special track shared between the group and their fans. To add up to the special connection, Stray Kids always makes sure to remind their fans how important they are. Sharing a bond is all about being there for each other, and that is exactly what the sweet track sings about. The song also opens up to every listener, as leader Bang Chan sings, “You can stay here,” to bring the feel of belonging and love with Stray Kids. It is always good to have something to hold on to and with “You Can STAY,” Stray Kids wants to be that thing.
“0325”
Stray Kids’ anniversary can never be celebrated without listing this particular song from their third EP, I am YOU. With the name as same as their debut date, the song reflects on the group’s journey so far. The lines sing, “This is our start line, our start line our start line 0325, it’s our start,” indicating their debut and urges to achieve more. As the lyrics burn passion and desires, the members also call out to their fans to stay beside them. The climax finally emphasizes the boys' ambitious journey towards victory, as they sing, “Even when I fall over or shudder for a little, I will definitely never give up.” They are sure to follow it forever.
The above list of songs and their thoughtful lyrics are among the many reasons for the group’s successful journey. With music, the group always tries to voice out for the unheard troubled souls and be a pal to walk together. In two years, the act has given so much to the world and is ready to bestow us with more in the future. With heartfelt gratitude and love, we wish them all happiness and blessings through their years. Happy Debut anniversary, Stray Kids!
