DeVita: The Next AOMG
Jay Park’s AOMG has been teasing the reveal of their new artist for months, using the phrase “Who’s the Next AOMG?” on their social media profiles. Many fans weighed in with guesses and suggestions for who the future artist should be, showing their excitement for who would join the ranks of successful K-Hip-Hop and R&B artists like Gray, Simon Dominic, and LOCO. If you didn’t know, AOMG stands for “Above Ordinary Music Group” or “Always On My Grind,” reflecting the grit and grind ingrained in each member hoping to establish their own unique sound and voice. Hoody and Sogumm were the only female artists on the AOMG roster, so the addition of DeVita adds some much needed femme power to the male-dominated label. With a visual prowess similar to DPR Live and vocals like Hoody, DeVita is already a force to be reckoned with.
Now that we’ve gone over the anticipatory details of DeVita’s addition to the team, let’s dive into the artist herself. DeVita, who was born in Korea and then moved to Chicago back in 2009, is a soloist who made her debut on April 9, 2020. She formerly used the stage name Chloe DeVita but shortened it to just DeVita. Prior to her official debut, she featured on songs with artists like Jung Jinhyeong, Jay Park, and Red House as early as 2018. After quietly building up her presence in the K-Hip-Hop world, this debut is her first chance to present herself to a wider audience and hopefully gain support from more avid listeners.
Her first body of work is an extended play titled CRÈME with lead single “EVITA!”, inspired by her stage name. Her EP also includes five other addictive songs which take us on a personal journey of love and self-discovery with different tastes of contemporary R&B. With the cinematic, sound effect-filled track “Movies,” slow love ballads like “All About You” and “1974 Live,” and faster paced track “Show Me,” DeVita showcases her milky vocals and skill of visual storytelling through music. The entire EP is sung in English and written by DeVita herself, allowing her to present a strong and passionate debut that is all her own.
The “EVITA!” music video is a futuristic, trippy alternate universe that simultaneously shows us DeVita snacking on Hot Cheetos and pizza with friends and kicking it on a spaceship while singing about breaking free and not caring what others say. It has everything from fake guns to a pink cape to edgy fashion, showing us some much needed girl power and DeVita’s “idgaf” attitude. Her versatility shows as she transitions from cool girl to a softer, more angelic ambiance in the “All About You” video, which is shot in film noir style and features an emotional DeVita in a glamorous sequin dress.
We were also graced with two very aesthetically pleasing live singing videos for “Movies” and “1974 Live.” From the captivating visuals to the fashion to the general good vibes, DeVita is an artist with a unique presence that many fans are already embracing. Her ability to deliver personal and raw messages in addition to her calming sound is a great addition to the AOMG label.
If you like what you see and want to support another female solo artist, make sure to stream CRÈME and follow DeVita on IG @lilchoster. With such a strong debut, we can’t wait to see what she does next!
