MONSTA X Asks to be Your Fantasy in Their New Music Video
After a two week delay to allow Shownu to heal from an injury, MONSTA X is back with their new song and music video “Fantasia.”
The Music Video
The video picks up in the same universe as their previous title track called “Follow.” They return with several motifs including the clock in the beginning. The use of light and shadow continues, along with the prevalence of black, blue, and gold. The members are dressed in regal black and gold outfits in a room that looks like a palace in some scenes, and in others they are in white and black outfits that contrast well with the spaces. Their choreography includes a lot of high impact moves that match with the mood of the song. Something interesting to see is the focus on the human body, more specifically the use of hands. Hands are shown several times, constantly reaching out to grab the members who are just barely out of reach. Other scenes show members in a sea of faceless bodies moving around them, and the final scene of the music video shows the members standing on a platform in the distance while the same faceless bodies are huddled in front of them with limbs moving about. It is definitely a surprising way to end a music video, it leaves the viewer thinking about what will come next, as it is now clear that the universe is connected to “Follow.”
The Song
Just like the music video, the song also echoes the flavors heard in “Follow,” however unlike the previous release, “Fantasia” feels a lot more cohesive in terms of the arrangement. The vocal and rap verses flow effortlessly into the chorus and hooks. The song opens with a punch from Jooheony’s verse, his unique tone helping to set the stage for the bouncy, yet powerful vocals from the rest of the team, supplemented by adlibs and backing vocals by both himself and I.M. The instrumental itself is almost exclusively percussion instruments which allow for the member’s vocals to shine through in the melody. If “Follow” is the song you play at the height of a dance party, then “Fantasia” is the song you play leading up to it. Both songs would make a great addition to your summer hype playlist.
