NCT DREAM is “Ridin” on a New Path in Their New Music Video
Following the long-awaited announcement of the change to the graduation system, NCT Dream released their final album as five members titled Reload. This extended play marks the end of an era for NCT Dream as they begin a walk down this new path. The title track “Ridin” is NCT Dream’s spin on what has become NCT’s signature sound.
The Song
This song really brings NCT Dream into the classic NCT sound. Their previous releases set them apart from the other units; however, “Ridin” joins other classic NCT title songs as NCT U’s “Boss” and NCT 127’s “Limitless.” “Ridin” follows the well-known formula that NCT title tracks tend to follow—an urban trap sound with lots of synths and an addictive bass line that makes the listener bounce their head. The way the vocals are arranged is actually the best thing about the track; Haechan takes the helm for a majority of the song with Chenle and Renjun close behind him. The trio’s vocals mix well with the rap verses. For the rap, Jaemin takes over with Jisung and Jeno taking more supportive roles. Because of autotuning, some of Jaemin’s bars could confuse the unseasoned NCTzen with the similarity in tone to fellow NCT member Taeyong. The chorus “riding and rolling baby reloading” will be stuck in your ears for hours.
The Music Video
The aesthetic of the music video follows a trend we have been seeing in NCT for the past few releases. The first few scenes show the members of Dream in urban settings: walls marred with graffiti, sirens blaring, glow and the dark paint used to paint designs in the walls and copious amounts of neon signs, some of which bear lyrics from the track. As the music video progresses, we see other areas that look more industrial with lots of piping. In some scenes, the members are surrounded by motorcycles; in other scenes, American muscle or racing cars act as props in the background. The members change outfits a few times, the one cohesive look a mixture of red and black that is featured during the dance break scenes. While most members are sporting a muted hairstyle with blondes and browns, your eye can’t help but draw to Jaemin whose hair is a bright shade of electric blue. Overall, the music video is well organized and shot well, which has become an expectation for NCT Dream music videos.
Final Thoughts
As the follow-up title track to chart killer “Boom,” some may be feeling a bit underwhelmed with “Ridin.” However, its chart achievements speak for themselves. This is definitely a song that would make a great addition to any pregame playlist. As Dream closes a door and a new one opens, NCTzens look forward to the return of Dream as six, and the bops that will follow. Until then, keep “ridin and rolling.” Check out “Ridin” below!
