Throwback Thursday: Summer Comebacks Part 1
With June in full swing, it’s only a matter of time before your favorite K-Pop group or artist returns with their latest summer comeback. Since there’s no time like summertime when it comes to K-Pop, this week’s Throwback Thursday brings you some of the hottest summer comebacks from years past!
“PARTY” - Girls’ Generation
Girls’ Generation rang in summer 2015 with their track “PARTY.” In addition to being released as a single in July of that year, the track ultimately ended up as the lead single for the group’s fifth full-album, Lion Heart. “PARTY” is about as bubblegum pop as it gets; the bright synths and upbeat chorus follow the quintessential formula for summer. It’s no wonder the song topped the Gaon Digital Chart.
“Hit Me” - MOBB feat. Kush
In 2016, WINNER’s Mino and iKON’s Bobby teamed up as MOBB to release their debut album, The MOBB. Prior to the release of the album, the two had released solo songs, but “Hit Me” is the perfect example of the artists coming together as a duo. While both Mino and Bobby are known for going hard, “Hit Me” is pure fun. The funk guitar gives the track a fresh vibe and the beat will have you wanting to get outside immediately.
“DINOSAUR” - Akdong Musician
One of 2017’s biggest hits and undoubtedly a song that took the brother-sister duo to new heights, Akdong Musician’s “DINOSAUR” is an EDM-house track that makes for a breezy summer afternoon. The change in genre was surprising for fans of the duo, as their signature sound leans more on the acoustic side of things, but the light EDM vibe suits them well, just like the childlike tones of “DINOSAUR” suit summer.
“Take Me Now” - FTISLAND
FTISLAND’s summer 2016 comeback with “Take Me Now” is one of the band’s heavier tracks. Though not quite like the other songs on this list, the driving guitars in “Take Me Now” are a perfect fit for those summer road trips with the car windows rolled down. The band’s album Where’s the Truth?, on which “Take Me Now” is the title song, even landed the top spot on the Gaon Albums Chart, proving that while summer is most assuredly a time for glittery EDM, it’s also a time for gritty rock ‘n roll.
