VICTON Endures Love on a “Mayday”
Without much of a wait, VICTON is back with their second single album Mayday. The group is quite a catch in the present K-Pop scene after their rise to popularity and earning recognition with their latest releases. And with “Mayday,” the group is sure to improve their strong base into a fortress and establish their presence in the industry.
The Single
“Mayday” is indeed an unexpected blow up from the septet as the fans were blindfolded with pleasant, flowery teaser images, to expect a mellow breezy comeback for the summer. But soon the release of video teasers hinting at a dark concept for the comeback made ALICEs (fans of VICTON) hype up with much anticipation.
Standing out from the usual shades of VICTON, “Mayday” weighs much on trap and fusion. With a very brief musical intro, Seungsik initiates the track with his silky verses, making the song interesting from the very beginning. Rapper Seungwoo’s feature after a while does surprise the listeners and makes the flow of the song even more interesting. Following the first verse, the chorus or the jewel of the song opens up with its rhythmic beats. “Fire Off a Mayday,” sings the chorus with the reference to the members’ distress. As Seungwoo’s monologue in the teaser states, “Love catches me off guard and leaves beautiful scars,” the members are ready to endure any kind of hardships to secure their love. The lyrics also use more survival terms such as “fire off,” “mayday,” and morse code “S.O.S,” which is quite interesting to listen to and brings out the essence of a battle sequence. Other than the repetitive chorus, the song also has other notable segments like Hanse’s soaring rap verses and iconic line saying, “such a beautiful destroyer,” Sejun’s sweet lines, Byungchan and Chan’s pleasing verses, Seungwoo’s high note during the climax, and Subin’s finishing line that are sure to engross the listeners throughout the song.
The single does play safe with its pompous music score and repetitive chorus, serving the current trend groups are led to. But again, the track surpasses in its style and paves a way for the group to score in the scenario.
The Music Video
The storyline starts from where “Howling” left us. Seungwoo who fell off a cliff in the previous music video lands hard on the ground and wakes up to see a different dimension. As the mysterious whispers fade away in loud heartbeats, the camera shifts to show the seven members perform the choreography of the song. Most of the scenes are shot in front of an old building which is quite famous among K-Pop fans as it was featured in Stray Kids’ “Hellevator.” The other shots are set amidst flowers, plants, and red lights, contrasting to the members’ dark cargo clothing. The video also brings in the presence of the lover in queen attire. Despite being before the members, none of them could reach her, as she flaunts in royalty with a purple dress and adorned with jewels.
The clean cut choreography is sure to be noticed, as the septet performs a solid and powerful choreography. The group formations and using a torch as a prop during the performance are quite unique and give a sort of satisfaction on the group’s hard work.
Final Thoughts
Though “Mayday” is usual in its sound and concept, we can definitely agree that VICTON has excelled in their own kind. Personally, keeping aside the critical perceptions, “Mayday” is one bop I loved and enjoy listening to in my playlist.
