Sometimes Korean idols save some of their best collaborations as hidden gems on their projects. For this week’s edition of B-sides, let’s take a look at some of the best B-side tracks that are collaborations.

“夜話 City Lights” by TVXQ ft. Taeyong

Appearing in TVXQ’s 2018 album New Chapter #2: The Truth Of Love, “夜話 City Lights” is a solo song performed by member U-Know and features rapper Taeyong of NCT. U-Know performs the seductive lyrics in his breathy voice, creating a mysterious R&B track. Renowned songwriter Hwang Yubin co-wrote the lyrics alongside Taeyong, who wrote his verse. Despite being fairly simple lines, Taeyong’s lively delivery stands out and gives the track a pop of energy.

“LOVE” by Ailee ft. Chen

Two of the best vocalists in the Korean music industry, Ailee and Chen of EXO collaborated on a track that navigated what love really is. “LOVE” was featured on Ailee’s 2019 studio album, butterFLY. One of the most beautiful aspects of the song was that it was performed like a real duet. The two singers bounced off of each other and their vocals danced in beautiful harmonies.

“In To You” by JAY B ft. g1nger

On his star-studded debut, JAY B brought the spotlight to indie-R&B singer g1nger. JAY B’s softer tones and g1nger’s indie style enhance the track’s slow sensual vibe. The track was worked on by JAY B alongside Woogie and Jay Park, so it was more than just a vocal collaboration.

“Ex Girl” by MONSTA X ft. Wheein

Released in 2016 before either of the artists had exploded to stardom, MONSTA X opted for a softer tone on “Ex Girl” featuring Wheein of MAMAMOO. Known for their hard-hitting bangers, this cute love song includes the MONSTA X rappers putting focus on their vocals, which beautifully complement Wheein’s raspy voice.

“Daydream” by B.I ft. LEE HI

An emotional R&B-infused rap song, “Daydream” finds B.I and his close friend and singer LEE HI reminiscing about the past and wondering if it was all just a dream. While LEE HI only features in the song during the chorus, she provides a much needed emotional break between B.I’s heartfelt verses. With multiple collaborations out by the two artists, their friendship is one of the most-valued in K-Pop.
