Super Band 2 Musicians Present Sensational Stages and Original Sound
JTBC’s global band survival show Super Band is back with a second season! Following the successful premiere of the first season, Super Band 2 portrays an intense competition of talented artists who seek to unveil the synergy of the band.
Welcome to Super Band
In parallel with the first part of the series, Super Band 2 intends to cultivate an environment where all music styles, regardless of genre, can thrive.
A major difference in casting, however, functions as the key player in painting the distinct atmosphere of the new season. Unlike the gender restriction setting the boundaries for an exclusive, all-male contestant show in Super Band 1, the second audition was open to all genders. The shift in the recruitment process essentially established a sense of increased inclusion, broadening the space for more diversity to flourish.
Such revision in the Super Band 2 guidelines translates into a huge recognition of the vast expansion of participation opportunities for a greater number of skilled artists who would not have been qualified to do so in Season 1.
In terms of individuals and the musical skill set they have to offer, the show offers a diverse spectrum that accommodates a heterogeneous cluster of musical styles ranging from Korean traditional music (gugak, 국악), rock, classic, and even electronic music. Super Band 2 is the center that facilitates interaction, experimentation, and collaboration between dedicated musicians.
Amid differences in their musical pursuit and potentially artistic vision, the talented artists are brought together solely by the common threads of passion and desire to produce creative music.
Essence of the Show
Nested within the broader frame of music and artistic expression, Super Band 2 contestants embark on a journey to break down distinct boundaries between genres.
The joint effort of putting together characteristic practices of instrumental sound, whether it may be a string, percussion, or even one’s voice, provides a clear insight into the contestants’ exceptional vision in their musical pursuit.
Participants embrace their unique voice and propel their identity as a means of appealing to potential teammates. Forming teams with unexpected musicians, it is quite interesting to see the various combinations of vocals matching with the mellifluous piano, powerful bass, rhythmic drum, and/or acoustic and electric guitars.
Ultimately, the process of experimenting with new sounds creates a fusion of distinct, individualistic perspectives, contributing to the legacy of legendary Super Band stages and captivating the attention of a wide audience.
Unfortunately, like all survival shows, the show retains the tendency of presenting the saddening elimination of skilled individuals. Still, the game of survival continues, and it is more than impressive to see the immense growth of already-established musical talent throughout the course of the show.
The Final Round
The next episode is set to air the fourteenth––and final––episode of the season. Get ready to be amazed by the spectacular performances to be set forth by the six finalist teams with Super Band’s very own panel of judges.
Following Super Band 1, Yoon Sang and Yoon Jongshin make their appearances as judges. Yoon Sang, as a former bassist and current songwriter and producer, has a wide range of experience and knowledge in a variety of music genres, from ballad to idol and even EDM. Yoon Jongshin’s musical style encompasses a dynamic melody that expresses a certain sentiment, tugging at the heartstrings of listeners universally.
Joining the two original cast members are Yu Huiyeoll, Lee Sangsoon, and CL.
Singer-songwriter Yu Huiyeol shares a sense of connection with many contestants as an experienced member of Toy, a one-man project band, while accomplished musician, DJ, and guitarist Lee Sangsoon gives insightful commentary on contestants’ stages.
CL takes the last spot as Super Band 2’s producer. A true diva on stage, CL’s artistic character ties into the perspective she takes when viewing stages. Reviewing the diversity of performances with no particular biases, the producer contributes to guiding the participants along the path of growth and improvement.
Collectively, the five renowned artists offer constructive critique and genuine evaluations referring back to their diverse expertise with band music. As producers on the show, the panelists aim to broaden the contestants’ scope of musical knowledge and encourage self-development through more experimental collaborations of original creativity.
As for the six finalist groups, the teams have already been established and fixed in the previous episodes. Although each group has its own distinct musical color, they share a common goal: earning the title of the next generation’s global K-Band.
The Whales is made of five members and engages the audience with deep, emotional connections. Bassist and frontman Yangjang Semin, pianist Kim Joonseo, vocalist/guitarist Kim Hankyeom, guitarist Jung Seokhoon, and drummer Jo Kihoon make up the dream team.
Four individuals were grouped to create The Fix. Multi-talented DJ producer Hwang Hyunjo, electric guitarist Jeong Nayoung, vocalist/frontman Leenzy, and drummer Eun Ahkyung amaze the audience with their powerful stages.
CNEMA evokes a sentimental reaction with their performances. Vocalist/guitarist/frontman Kitak teams up with bassist Byun Jeongho, drummer Kim Seulong, and vocalist/trumpeter Lim Yoonseong to create an unforgettable stage on Super Band 2.
KARDI exudes an impactful presence on stage with both their music and performance. Vocalist Kim Yeji, geomungo (거문고, traditional Korean plucked zither) Park Dawool, bassist Hwang Inkyu, and hip-hop drummer Jeong Seongbae are led by frontman/electric guitarist Hwang Leen to perform striking and shocking stages.
CRAXILVER is interestingly a group that was partially pre-established; members of the metal band Crack Shot (electric guitarist Willy K, vocalist Vince, drummer Danny Lee, and bassist Cyan) recruit pianist Oh Eunchul to add a refreshing look to their vivid performances.
Poco a Poco stands as the final team. Vocalist/guitarist J.UNA plays the role of frontman, leading his team with acoustic guitarist Kim Jinsan, guitarist Jeong Minyuk, and classical guitarist/vocalist Jang Haeun. With four guitars present, it is worth taking a look at how the group manages to use this overflow of guitars to their advantage.
Super Band 2 advances a solid blend of well-rounded musicians and impressive music that will get you entranced in no less than a minute. Tune into the final episode of the show and enjoy the artists coming together to create an original product of euphony in sound. After all, who would want to miss the symphony of such remarkable artists?
