The Countdown is Over: Super Junior-D&E’s First Album is Here!
Super Junior’s sub-unit Super Junior D&E, made up of members Donghae and Eunhyuk, released their first album COUNTDOWN on November 2. The album was made to celebrate the unit's 10 year anniversary, and is made up of nine original songs plus an English version of the single “ZERO.” COUNTDOWN shows off the duo’s unique voices and versatility with a range of ballads, jazz-inspired numbers, and just enough fun, upbeat songs to keep any fan on their toes about what's coming next.
The album starts with “ZERO,” an electronic-heavy dance track that fits the unit’s vibe like a glove. The music video complements the song as the idols explore the inner workings of a video game and show off their dance moves in the process. Following “ZERO” is “Beautiful Liar.” Similar to the first track in genre and musical components, “Beautiful Liar” takes a smoother, more seductive approach.
“Far Away” flips the feeling of the album by adding a jazzy, retro element. This song takes you on a relaxing trip around the world with its tropical beat and lyrics reminding you of your favorite places. The album leans even further into that retro inspiration with “Feel That Feelin’." A fast and bouncy song, “Feel That Feelin’” transports its listeners into a 1960s film. “La La La” combines that 1960s feeling with the EDM elements from both “ZERO” and “Beautiful Liar.” At this point in the album, it is obvious to see the deliberate precision that was put into making a cohesive song list.
Then it is all stripped away, and “Have a Nice Day” begins. The song is enticing in its simple lyrics and open but complex instrumentation. It is a ballad that stands apart by adding real musical elements, such as acoustic guitar and whistling, while still fitting with the other songs by having ambient synth and drum patterns highlighting the smooth vocals. “Muse” and “Share My Love” both add something new to the album, with “Muse” adding a heavier rap emphasis and “Share My Love” providing the throwback, early 2000s K-Drama soundtrack element that we didn't know we needed.
The whole album is wrapped up with “Home." An homage to who they are and where they have been, “Home” is a cinematic ballad that provides the deep emotional vocals and lyrics that were needed to make this album complete.
