BTS Has the Superstar Glow in “Butter”

History has been made! On May 21 at 1 p.m. KST, BTS released their second English track and music video, “Butter.” Once again, the septet brought their smooth charm and zeal for their new vibrant summer track. BTS seeks to bring people together in the midst of a lengthy year without in-person concerts.

It’s not a BTS release without their record-breaking accomplishments. In the first 24 hours of its release, “Butter” earned a whopping 108.2 million views, securing the biggest first-day view count of all time on YouTube. They previously broke the record last year with “Dynamite,” earning over 101.1 million views on its first day. The music video became the fastest video in YouTube history to rack up 10 million views in just 13 minutes! “Butter” also debuted at No. 2 on the global Spotify charts with just over 11 million streams, making it a record-breaking opening day for BTS. In addition to their global chart debut record, the song reached 20.9 million global streams, making it the largest single day streams in Spotify history! Needless to say, BTS continues to leave such a profound and stellar mark in the music industry.

“Butter” is a dance-pop track featuring a distinctive bass line and rich synth sounds, bringing the summer vibe ARMYs have been waiting for. Rapper and leader of the group, RM participated in writing the rap verses for the track to fit each member’s individual flair.

Throughout the song, there are significant lines within their witty lyrics! BTS features a nod to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” in Jungkook’s line, “Like a criminal undercover,” and a shout-out to Usher in V’s line, “Don’t need no Usher to remind me you got it bad.” One of the more pure and significant lines of the song occurs during RM’s rap where he says, “Got ARMY right behind us when we say so.” It’s a heartwarming acknowledgement to their fans that have been by their side since their debut. This song is both addicting and “smooth like butter.”

The music video will give fans an instant serotonin boost from BTS’s energetic and powerful performance. At the beginning of the video, member Jungkook captures everyone’s attention with what appears to be an eyebrow piercing, which later was discovered to be removable gems placed on his face. He is also seen in the video giving a kiss to his hand where his ARMY tattoo is located. Among the fun moments throughout the video, the post-chorus dance break will make your heart flutter. Each member shows off a freestyle dance that exhibits their distinct personality in an elevator.

The choreography shown throughout this video appears footwork-heavy, which is fitting for such an addicting track. Tying into RM’s notable rap verse, the music video showcases a heart-melting moment where the rest of the members spell out “ARMY” in the background behind RM— a moment that can be compared side-by-side with a photo from their early debut days. Aside from the charismatic moments caught in the music video, it also features j-hope eating a slice of butter with a smirk to end on a comedic note.

BTS is certain to excel in breaking more records during the promotion of “Butter.” Let’s be sure to take part in witnessing these historical moments. Check out their music video below!
