“Hula Hoops”

Hoops and circles are the name of the game when it comes to “Hula Hoops.” While the song may not feature or be exactly about the toy itself, one thing about hula hoops is that they will be round, endless, and can go on for a long time as more rotations are put in. For “Hula Hoops,” there are several things that are reminiscent of hula hoops, from earrings and rings, down to how the world spins, that can be interpreted from the song. Featuring Beenzino and MAMAMOO’s Hwasa, the three come together in a song that is groovy, cool, and addictive thanks to the percussions and synthesized hip-hop beats. “Hula Hoops” is simple in the sense that DPR Live wants listeners to feel the vibe and just have a catchy song to enjoy. The aim of the song isn’t to think too hard on the meaning but rather have a good time and also stay fresh. There is a sense of swag and confidence in “Hula Hoops” from all three artists that draws in listeners to keep playing this particular track.

As hula hoops are circular/round, the entire music video is showcased within a circle and oftentimes a fish-eye lens. Despite not being able to see the whole background settings of DPR Live, Beenzino, and Hwasa, it sticks to the theme of circles. There are also other subtleties of hoops that one may miss the first time around, like how all artists are wearing hoop earrings which are either blinged/iced out (DPR Live), neon-colored (Hwasa), or just perfect for their style (Beenzino). The music video also features moments of some choreography (although not from DPR Live, Beenzino, and Hwasa) to “Hula Hoops” as well as getting the joy of a fun and bright collaboration that many don’t get to see as often in a release.

“Hula Hoops” is definitely an earworm type of song that is sure to be stuck on repeat for a long time. DPR Live does not fail to have a delight of an album from beginning to end, and fans will be pleased with IITE COOL.
