Looking into the Broken Kaleidoscope with NIve
Park Jisoo, more commonly known as NIve, is a musical jack-of-all-trades; songwriter, composer, producer, singer—the man can do it all. He’s further showing how talented he is by releasing his first EP, Broken Kaleidoscope. The Kraze sat down with NIve to discuss the first single from the album, “ESCAPE,” how he got started in his music career, and his favorite thing to do when he’s not in the studio.
Q: How did you come up with your stage name NIve?
A: It’s funny because it wasn’t like I suddenly thought, “this should be [my] name” one day. I was trying to figure out a word or even a sound that represented me, and a sound similar to “NIve” popped up in my head. Afterwards, I discovered that NIve means “being cool without having to say cool.” I really relate to that meaning personally because I don’t think “cool” always has to mean what we think it does. Cool is what you make it!
Q: How did you get started with music? Did you always want to be a musician, or did you decide later in life?
A: I actually didn’t decide to pursue music until later in life. I started with classical clarinet as my first instrument, and through that, I figured out that music was the best tool I had to express myself.
Q: Let’s talk about your newest song, “ESCAPE.” Can you explain the concept behind the song?
A: The song is about feeling the need to get away and run away from overwhelming feelings—even if they’re good ones—that come from just living life. It’s a song that says that it’s okay to feel like you need to escape from time to time.
Q: Can fans expect more music from you this year? An EP or another single?
A: Who knows…maybe there will be, maybe there won’t – you’ll just have to wait to find out!
Q: What’s your favorite part of the creative process when making new music?
A: My favorite part of the creative process is probably when I write a melody that just fits and feels good right away. It’s one of the best feelings you can have when making music!
Q: Is there a music genre you want to try that you haven’t tried yet?
A: I’d like to try and incorporate more jazz into my music one day.
Q: Do you have a favorite song that you’ve written/produced?
A: As of right now, it’s still “Beautiful Goodbye” by EXO’s Chen.
Q: What songs have you been listening to recently?
A: Recently, I’ve been listening to Bruno Major’s “To Let a Good Thing Die” pretty often.
Q: What do you like to do when you are not creating music?
A: I like to go for a drive whenever I can!
Q: If you were not a musician, what type of career would you have?
A: I think maybe a teacher.
Q: Who is an artist that you haven’t worked with yet, but you want to? What type of song would you like to create with them?
A: There are a lot of artists I’d of course love to work with, but right now, I’m in a space where I feel the need to focus on myself and perfect my craft first.
