Step Outside The Box with These Alternative Female Idols

Sometimes we want something a little different from our typical K-Pop girl groups. Lucky for us, there are plenty of alternatives. Here are three of our favorite Korean girl groups whose sounds break the barriers between K-Pop and other genres.

Rolling Quartz

We have discussed this girl group a few times, but it goes without saying that they are not your everyday idol group. Rolling Quartz is a five-member alternative rock band powerhouse consisting of members Jayoung, Iree, Hyunjung, Areum, and Youngeun. They debuted in 2020 with their song “Blaze” after combining their former groups Rolling Girls and Rose Quartz together. If you like bands like ONE OK ROCK or Bring Me The Horizon, you’re going to love this group.

Dreamcatcher

Of course, many would put Dreamcatcher under the realm of K-Pop girl groups as they follow a very similar formula to other groups. However, their sound is what sets them apart from the others. Their heavy rock and EDM influences make them the perfect crossover group when you’re looking for something a little bit outside of the box. This seven-member group debuted as Dreamcatcher in 2017 with their single “Nightmare.” Since then, the group has gone on to achieve major success and even completed their first European tour in 2018.

CHEEZE

This soloist, formerly of the band by the same name, is an indie electro-pop artist for all of those times when you want to listen to music that sounds like it’s straight out of a K-Drama. Simple and sweet, CHEEZE has the musical styling for easy-listening. She debuted as a soloist on February 17, 2017 as the final remaining member of her former band, and she is also a member of the project girl group CSVC, a retro-indie four member group that debuted in 2019.

There are plenty of other female soloists and groups out there for you to explore when you’re looking for something unique in the realm of Korean music. Whether it’s indie, rock, metal, or bedroom pop, Korean female artists have got you covered!
