School Dramas to Get Into as You Head Back to the Classroom

Summer is winding down and folks are heading back to school. Instead of being sad about it, K-Drama fans can use what little time they have left to check out these school-themed dramas. The genres vary from romance comedies to melodramas and crime, so there is a drama for everyone, regardless of taste. Check out something new or relive a classic favorite! 

Boys Over Flowers

Boys Over Flowers is the gateway drama for many K-Drama fans. Geum Jandi (Goo Hyesun) gets a scholarship to a prestigious high school after saving a student. There she meets the F4, the most popular and notorious group of students in the school. Because of her financial and social status, she becomes the F4’s newest bullying target. Rather than back down from them, Jandi fights them head-on. Her fearless attitude and kind heart cause two of the members to fall in love with her. Slowly, the F4 change their ways for the better. Jandi will have to decide if their positive actions are enough for her to let her guard down around them.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bokjoo

This hysterical rom-com takes place at Haneol Sport University, where Korea’s finest athletes go to train and attend classes. Kim Bokjoo (Lee Sungkyung) is a weightlifter who dreams of winning a gold medal. She and her friends bump into Jung Joonhyung (Nam Joohyuk), a handsome swimmer at school. Joonhyung realizes Bokjoo is a friend from his past, and the two become close.

Bokjoo begins dating and needs Joohyung’s help to keep her weightlifting life a secret from her love interest. While helping her, Joohyung starts to develop feelings for her. Will he confess or keep his desires hidden?

True Beauty

Im Jukyung (Moon Gayoung) hated being bullied in middle school, so she reinvents herself for high school. She learns to put on makeup and begins to catch the eyes of every male student in her school. Two of these students, Lee Suho (Cha Eunwoo) and Han Seojoon (Hwang Inyeop), fall madly in love with Jukyung and go out of their way to prove that they are the best for her. Jukyung likes both men as friends, but who will she choose to give her heart to?

Dream High

In a previous article, The Kraze Mag talked about K-Dramas for K-Pop fans to start with, and Dream High should definitely be added to the list. This star-studded drama follows six Kirin Art High School students who are trying to break into the Korean music scene. Ko Hyemi (Bae Suzy) applied to the school to pay off her father’s debts. To get accepted, she brings two other students, Song Samdong (Kim Soohyun) and Jin Guk (Taecyeon). Samdong and Jin Guk fall in love with Hyemi, which complicates their friendship. Hyemi had dreams to become a world-class violinist before entering Kirin Art High School, but now she has to decide another way to reach her goals.

Both seasons of Dream High are available on Viki and Kocowa.

Solomon’s Perjury

A student is found dead at school on Christmas night. The police and administration assume they died by their own hands and quickly move on from the terrible incident, but all may not be what it seems. Ko Seoyeon (Kim Hyunsoo) receives a note from a witness saying that the student was murdered. Seoyeon and her friends refuse to let the murderer get away, so they develop a plan to hold a trial at school to get to the bottom of the mystery. However, what started as finding the killer turns into something more sinister as secrets are revealed in this crime drama.

Extracurricular

Oh Jisoo (Kim Donghee) has goals in life. He’s the top student in his class and strives to stay on top because he knows that’s how he gets into the top school. Jisoo doesn’t seem to have any friends, but he doesn’t mind because he has a secret. Unfortunately, that secret will wind up being his downfall. Unbeknownst to everyone around him, Jisoo runs an illegal business that allows teen girls to make money in the company of men.

Everything is going great until he starts to spend time with Bae Gyuri (Park Juhyun). She makes a mistake once she discovers his secret, which sends the whole business spiraling out of control. Jisoo will have to risk lives to keep out of prison. This drama is a must-watch if you are interested in crime, melodrama, and rooting for the underdog.
