The Boyz B-Sides

Four years ago when The Boyz debuted, quite a few members of the group were still teenagers, including maknae Eric, who was only 17 at the time. Over the years, the group has not only aged but also matured in their style and sound. With their latest album THRILL-ING out now, let’s take a look back at some of their best B-sides.

“Walkin’ In Time”

Starting off as a simple ballad, “Walkin’ In Time” transforms into an EDM trance song. Despite the infusion of electronic rhythms, the track remains a mellow song, describing the sense of longing for the happy moments in the past and a sense of loneliness. The track was produced by popular producer Primary, who has worked with artists like Zion.T and Crush.

“Get It”

Appearing on the group’s second mini album THE START, “Get It” is a powerful trap EDM song. Combining their charming vocals with sensual production, the record was a bold choice for The Boyz, who were still rookies back then. The song featured credits by hitmaker Bekuh BOOM, who has almost exclusively worked with YG Entertainment artists.

“Butterfly”

“Butterfly” is a slow R&B jam reminiscent of 2000s R&B songs with lyrics co-written by member Eric. Dreamy lyrics amplify the ethereal atmosphere of the song, which was produced by members of the production team The HUB. As explained by songwriter Charlotte Wilson on Genius, The HUB’s teams collaborated closely with Eric in the making of this beautiful track.

“Whiplash”

This funky pop-rock track appeared on the group’s last album, CHASE. “Whiplash” contains witty lyrics matching the flirtatious theme of the album, describing the ecstatic emotions one feels when in love with someone, comparing those emotions to whiplash. The song perfectly encapsulates how the group has matured while remaining fresh and bright.

“Scar”

Included in their full-length album REVEAL, “Scar” is a hip-hop song where the weight of the heavy 808 sub-bass pushes it to become one of their sexiest tracks to date. With sensual lyrics co-written by members Sunwoo and Eric, the song captures the listeners with its fatal charm. The track uses venomous snake bites as a metaphor for wounds of heartbreak that don’t heal easily.
