BTOB returns as a four-piece with their new album 4U: OUTSIDE. The four members Changsub, Eunkwang, Peniel, and Minhyuk, who debuted as a sub-unit of BTOB last year, have left behind their name BTOB 4U and are instead promoting under their group name. Fresh off their journey on Mnet’s Kingdom: Legendary War, the group released a six-track mini-album. Let’s take a look at what the vocal kings of K-Pop have to offer with the new release.

The lead single from the album, “Outsider,” is a beautiful blend of neo-soul and funk sprinkled with jazz influences. For a group that consisted of exceptionally powerful vocalists paired with gritty rappers, BTOB as a K-Pop group never fit the mold of typical idols in terms of their sound, lyrics, and style. In their new song, with lyrics co-written by Peniel and Minhyuk, they reclaim and empower the word “outsider.” They want to be outsiders in this world. The song also contains a secondary meaning where BTOB wants to be free from the same pattern of day-to-day life and to become strong enough to step outside the cycle.

The song is paired with a cinematic music video that finds each member playing different classic movie roles. Changsub plays the role of a tired office worker, Eunkwang portrays a comical zombie, Minhyuk stars in a noir film, and Peniel pays tribute to James Bond movies. As the music video progresses, each member steps out of their character and writes their own storyline. The music video features elaborate set designs reminiscent of the group’s performances on Kingdom, and they perform a sleek choreography in an eclectic collection of outfits.

The album’s B-sides are perfectly carved gems both in terms of sound and lyrics. Co-written by Minhyuk, “DREAMER” is an exciting dance track about dreaming and fearlessly taking on new challenges despite fierce competition. The strong and energetic vibe of the song is bound to inspire listeners who might have lost sight of their dreams. “Can’t breathe ” is a minimal electronic pop song that expresses the pain and longing that follows a breakup. “Traveler” is a dreamy synth-pop track with a very touching message: a consolation to those who have become adults, but sometimes feel burdened and lonely in this big world. “Waiting 4 U” is a fan favorite song, co-written by member Hyunsik who is currently serving in the military. Pretty self-explanatory, the ballad is performed by the four members who are waiting for the other members, Hyunsik and Sungjae, to return from the military. The album closes with “Finale (Show And Prove),” pre-released as their final song on Kingdom

The album perfectly encapsulates BTOB’s versatility. From Minhyuk’s and Peniel’s powerful lyricism and rapping, to Changsub and Eunkwang’s heavenly vocals, 4U: OUTSIDE finds BTOB playing with various styles and genres. The music video for the title track also showcases BTOB’s colorful personalities that they are known for in the industry. Overall, 4U: OUTSIDE is a mature step forward for BTOB, who are now rightfully referred to as industry veterans. Watch the music video for “Outsider” below!
