Girl Groups Gone Viral on TikTok

K-Pop fans from all over the world have found an outlet to share and discuss their favorite groups via TikTok. From giving each other song recommendations to showing off their biases to performing dance covers, the K-Pop community on TikTok is thriving. What is even more interesting is the existence of K-Pop outside of this specific niche, in the form of viral audios. There have been quite a few viral sounds made from K-Pop songs that have permeated all areas of the app, and more often than not, users of these audios have no idea where they are from. Here is a list of a few girl group songs that came out in 2021 and are now popular on TikTok.

“Wrap Me In Plastic” by MOMOLAND

This song is a collaboration effort with CHROMANCE that was dropped in February of 2021. “Wrap Me In Plastic” was originally released in 2017 by CHROMANCE and was remade with MOMOLAND after the song went viral on TikTok. It now has a dance tied to the song and has been used in 10,000 videos. This newer version also has over 13 million streams on Spotify.

“Dun Dun Dance” by Oh My Girl

“Dun Dun Dance” mostly stayed tied to the K-Pop community on TikTok, with a lot of the videos using this audio being of idol fancams or K-Pop fans dancing along to the song. Nevertheless, the sound has accumulated 15,000 videos since its release in May of 2021. Oh My Girl also racked up almost 16 million streams on Spotify.

“Queendom” by Red Velvet

Red Velvets August release already has 29,000 videos under its belt on TikTok. While almost all of the videos are K-Pop related, there is a wide variety of content styles. “Queendom’”s audio has dance videos, interview outtakes, storytimes, and more. As for its Spotify, the single has around 18 million streams.

“PTT (Paint The Town)” by LOONA

This song has become the hot girl dance audio for K-Pop fans and a hot girl transition audio for nonfans. “PTT (Paint The Town)” stretched itself into the anime and makeup niches because of its catchy lyrics and clean drops. It has almost 18,000 videos on TikTok and a little over 18 million streams on Spotify.

“ASAP” by STAYC

“ASAP” is the dance trend that everyone saw coming. The K-Pop side of TikTok exploded with videos of fans punching along in true STAYC fashion, allowing the audio to amass almost 48,000 videos. This April release also has around 28 million streams on Spotify and is the song that pushed the group into stardom.

“Next Level” by aespa

Another dance trend that took off on TikTok and allowed the audio to go viral is aespa’s “Next Level.” This song also has 48,000 videos, but contains a wider variety of content than “ASAP.” A majority of the videos are fans doing the dance, however, there is also a large number of makeup videos and POV (point of view) videos under the official sound.

“After School” by Weeekly

“After School” by Weeekly has blown up the most out of all of the songs on this list. This March release quickly rose in popularity on TikTok in multiple areas including Food TikTok, Makeup, Storytime, Dance, and, of course, K-Pop TikTok. It has 398,000 videos and that number is still rising. Likewise, the song has 75 million streams on Spotify.
