ATEEZ Wholly Captivates Viewers With “Deja Vu”

One of the unique factors that originally gained ATEEZ attention was the new format of title tracks they brought to the table back in 2019. With two songs presented as options for the title track, fans were sent to vote for their favorite, and whichever song won would become the lead title. Kicking off with “WAVE” vs. “ILLUSION,” followed by “INCEPTION” vs. “THANXX,” the saga continues in 2021 with “Deja Vu” vs. “Eternal Sunshine.” The pre-promotion voting period this time involved the members interviewing other idols on which song they preferred, with idols such as Block B’s Taeil, MAMAMOO’s Moonbyul, Jessi, and even Rain chiming in to offer their opinion of which song is best. Ultimately, ATINY made the choice, and “Deja Vu” came out on top.

The Title: “Deja Vu”

Right off the bat, “Deja Vu” has a very different feeling from the last release “Fireworks (I’m The One).” While the previous title began soft and really built up energy into the chorus before exploding out, “Deja Vu”’s melody remains fairly subdued in comparison. In fact, overall, it feels like all melodic elements are more subdued, yet the song packs just as much of a punch without being as in-your-face. There is a surprising amount of power in the lower register vocals and raps. The beat has a more laissez-faire feel with a light Latin influence, providing a smooth base for the vocals. This type of song is a perfect fit for Mingi’s return, as his rap shines in his lower voice register and contrasts beautifully with his higher singing vocals that end in a whisper, further emphasizing the soft power of the song. It’s a different sound from ATEEZ, but they execute it so well and naturally that it’s instantly addicting.

It doesn’t take long to be totally mesmerized by the music video. The opening shot has ATEEZ standing on a rooftop during a lightning storm, clad in black-and-white suits each perfectly fitted to their respective member. There is a very heavy focus on choreography, which is to be expected of ATEEZ since performance is one of their strong points. The choreography is as fluid as the song would convey, with a few absolutely killer shots from Yunho, Yeosang, San, and Wooyoung. “Deja Vu” definitely gives off some mature vibes from the boys in a way that we haven’t seen before, which is quite refreshing. The concept has some futuristic properties, which is matched by the chains and leather outfits. Hints of the group’s extensive lore is also present, with the appearance of “HALA HALA” Hongjoong as one example, and Yeosang holding an hourglass as another. Possibly the most killer part of the video for just about any viewer is the end when the boys are performing in the rain, a visual that absolutely oozes sex appeal. Avert your eyes, children.

The Album: ZERO : FEVER Part.3

The new mini-album ZERO : FEVER Part.3 features six new full tracks including the two possible titles. “Eternal Sunshine” kicks off the album and has a very dreamy feel, which stands in stark contrast to the title winner “Deja Vu.” The song takes much more of a traditional pop influence in the sound, with supporting EDM elements and a hint of retro guitar. The song definitely has a groovy feel and is a much brighter type of sound that is more reminiscent of tracks like “WAVE.” The first B-side “Feeling Like I Do” follows this formula as well, creating a smooth transition from “Eternal Sunshine.”

From here the album takes a different turn, with “Deja Vu” coming next and followed by “ROCKY.” “ROCKY” has a bit of a harder edge to it, so it makes sense that it follows the title track. This has the more familiar type of intense ATEEZ sound that we often hear in their title tracks, with hip-hop influences taking center stage in the song. If you like when ATEEZ goes harder in their music, this B-side will be a favorite.

“All About You” takes a more whimsical approach to the sound and feels very much like a love confession for ATINY. The softness of the song is highlighted by the lyrics, as the title would suggest. It feels very much like a warm hug needed on a difficult day, and has a surprisingly addicting beat despite the gentle tone of the track.

“밤하늘 (Not Too Late)” rounds out the album with a softer pop ballad, presenting a somewhat bittersweet melody that feels as if it is meant to acknowledge hurt and still provide comfort. Vocals get the spotlight here, with even rappers Hongjoong and Mingi featuring more vocals than rap in their respective verses. The album fades out slowly with this track placing a period at the end of it.

After listening through the full album, “Deja Vu” clearly stands out as the best track with title potential, at least in my eyes. With each listen, the title gets more and more addicting, and the video draws you in so intensely it’s impossible to look away. But maybe that is just my personal bias taking hold. ZERO : FEVER Part.3 features a much more subdued type of sound as a whole, which is a bit different from their usual releases, but it’s a refreshing change as well. Still, I would have preferred more intense songs, but that’s just my own taste. “Deja Vu” is definitely a track that will pull everyone in and make them pay attention to this group, regardless of any previous bias one could have held. As expected, it’s a great comeback from a talented group.
