Throwback Thursday: Body Talk
There’s a surprising amount of anatomically-correct K-Pop songs out there. Let’s get physical and review some body-inspired titles.
“Rock Ur Body” - VIXX
It’s always fun to go back to VIXX’s bright and vibrant history prior to their more creative and experimental releases. “Rock Ur Body” is a great pick-me-up able to get you moving in an instant (just like the lyrics say).
“The Eye” - INFINITE
Maybe this week's theme was all just an elaborate scheme to highlight INFINITE’s incredible yet criminally underrated 2016 release “The Eye.” This song and accompanying video are a pleasure for both the ears and the eyes in true INFINITE fashion, with drama and theatrics that feel a bit like a full-length feature film. It’s impossible not to feel moved by the emotional performance delivered here.
“Body Talk” - Red Velvet
If there were ever an official ranking of the best Red Velvet B-sides, the author hopes “Body Talk” would find its way into the top 10. This song is atmospheric and a little ethereal, offering a perfect come-down from the high-tempo title track, “Rookie.”
“Lip & Hip” - HyunA
Here’s a bit of throwback-inception with HyunA’s ‘80s-inspired 2017 release “Lip & Hip.” The clash of HyunA’s sensuality and the youthful imagery in the video drives home the overarching coming-of-age themes of the entire concept.
“Odd Eye” - SHINee
“Odd Eye” was an incredible way to open SHINee’s legendary fourth album, Odd. Not only sounding incredible, with a distinct chorus equipped with hypnotizing falsettos, the live stages for this track were equally as mesmerizing. Every track on this album was amazing, but this song in particular was definitely special.
“TAIL” - Sunmi
Tails aren't truly human anatomy, but the inspiration is still there. Sunmi’s dark and seductive release “TAIL” was a concept we had not seen from Sunmi in a while, and was definitely a welcome shift in her eclectic discography. The video and song themselves were definitely notable, but the choreography stands out here. The cause and effect moments, where Sunmi’s actions guide and control the movements of the backup dancers, to the multiple instances where arms and legs are used to create the ‘tail’ are incredible.
