Musical Universe K-909 Unveils Hidden Charms of K-Pop Artists
I’m assuming that if you’re on this page of The Kraze website reading this article, you’re a K-Pop fan. If not, you’re most likely in the process of falling into the endless rabbit hole of this industry.
Needless to say, K-Pop has embarked on a sensational rise over the years. We’re living in the moment of history-making as the Korean entertainment industry establishes its distinct presence by continuously breaking into international markets.
Fans across the globe yearn to learn more about the artists who catch their attention—what songs they enjoy, what skills they want to show off, and even their dream collaboration. The foundational growth of social media networking has hugely shifted the artist-fan interaction, even evolving to the point where various artists are able to hold live virtual concerts. As an individual who follows diverse personalities in Korean entertainment, however, it occurs to me that there is a lack of abundance in shows that deliver the true charms of industry talents.
Besides the usual promotional activities like music shows, entertainment variety shows, and company-created content, it’s rare to find K-Pop musicians, specifically idols, showcasing their authentic and raw talent as artists while simultaneously breaking through the company-driven image that traps them in their static celebrity persona.
JTBC’s recent launch of a music show aims to fulfill this expectation. The new music program, Music Universe K-909, features K-Pop idols and Korean musicians who speak to the global audience through their performances on the show.
Music Universe K-909, or particularly the “K-909” portion of the title, originates from the word “K-Pop.” The concept of the program embodies the notion of K-Pop’s worldwide sensation that brought about a new cultural wave. This change reflects in the title with an intentional design choice of physically reversing the word K-Pop. Ultimately, the visual representation underlines the positive impact that resonates with the audience on a global scale, weaving in the special bond that K-Pop artists particularly share with their respective fandoms as well as novice-level listeners.
The program bears its slogan to heart by manifesting the production crew’s desire to craft a story of music unique to the featured artist. The passion embodied by these creative personalities is used as a drive to present their musical aspirations through genuine storytelling; essentially, the show challenges their capacity to highlight their unique charm and spread the word about them through their performance on the show.
The program ultimately works to interconnect a network of people through the outward presentation of artists’ passion in the form of a performance. And so, it’s a nice treat for listeners and viewers alike because Music Universe K-909 constructs an opportunity for musicians to perform their own newly released tracks or cover a song of their choice, which may be B-sides or tracks of artists they enjoy.
Welcome the K-909 Crew
As much as this music show is structured around constructing opportunities for showcasing talent, the program’s host stands as one of the most influential and respected artists in K-Pop history.
Solo artist BoA takes over the mic, presenting herself as a bridge in connecting fans and junior musicians in the scene.
The long-lasting and ongoing fame of SM Entertainment’s solo artist is reflective of the distinct execution of her musical talent across various eras.
Her discography is more than enough to set her status as a professional in the industry and shine a light on her limitless potential to thrive in the musical scene. Even outside of her main expertise, the talent crafts her multifaceted personality by actively participating in variety shows such as a judge on Mnet’s hottest dance competition franchise (Street Woman Fighter, Street Man Fighter) alongside starring in films.
BoA, as the lead emcee, sets the stage for artists to narrate and unravel the mysterious ties that may appear in the form of mystique (which, once again, is commonly used as a marketing tactic by entertainment companies to avoid unnecessary rumors but also simultaneously restricts the autonomy of the personalities).
An artist respected by many, the host of Music Universe K-909 makes an effort to ease the mood of the guests who may be extra cautious around the iconic living legend of the industry. Diving into thought-inducing questions, BoA garners the attention of the guests for the whole segment.
Alongside our main host, two so-called assistants are hired to enhance this immersive K-Pop experience on the show. Renowned entertainer JaeJae and NMIXX’s Haewon, a rising fourth generation vocalist in JYP Entertainment's newest girl group, make their way as emcees of the segment Global Chart Forum. JaeJae, the “K-Pop professor,” and Haewon, the “K-Pop assistant,” are in charge of presenting a Global K-Pop Chart that summarizes numerical statistics involving international K-Pop album sales. Along the way, the cast members show off their expertise in K-Pop and its history by playing games that require extensive knowledge of the industry.
The main emcee BoA runs the rest of the three of four show segments. Through the Next Generation segment, BoA introduces the rising leaders of the K-Pop industry, highlighting talents who are not yet as mainstream or big. The First Stage Performance indicates exactly what it implies; talents are allowed to perform their newest release for the first time on the stage of K-909. Last but not least, the Global Collaboration Stage entails a joint performance segment where foreign artists put together a harmonious stage with domestic artists. It’s been an impressive series so far; who wouldn’t want to listen and watch Chungha singing “Bad Boy” with Christopher or Chuu singing “Comethru” with Jeremy Zucker himself?
Music Universe K-909 molds a particular stage for musicians to present their artistic abilities. Airing a single episode weekly, the show seems to do its part in relaying the raw talents of featured artists with occasional talks led by BoA, a senior and fellow musician in the industry, and visual accompaniments that reveal their personalities.
