A 2022 Fan Advice Recap
As the year comes to an end, it’s nice to reflect. 2022 has been full of ups and downs, and it can be good to look back and remember things we have talked about as we grow into the new year.
Every Fandom Has Its Ups and Downs
Being a K-Pop fan and finding a sense of “home” within fandoms can be the best feeling in the world. Between making friends who love the same group (or groups) as you, attending concerts, or purchasing merchandise, it can be so fun to be a K-Pop fan! But that doesn’t mean some of the days aren’t draining. With fan wars and drama between fans, sometimes fandoms can be tiring. Just remember, at the end of the day, we’re all here to support our favorite idols!
Fan Wars Are Never Worth It
While fan wars usually blow over quickly, it’s not worth getting involved in arguments over things that are usually silly and mundane. Escalating these fights never makes things better. It’s okay to have different opinions on things in K-Pop, but it’s never okay to belittle or bully other fans if they disagree with you. If you find yourself getting dragged into negativity, remember that it’s okay to log out and step away from it.
Not Everyone Is Going to Understand Your K-Pop Interest
While liking K-Pop can be fun, you may find yourself explaining why you enjoy it with some people. Not everyone will understand why you like K-Pop, whether it be due to the language barrier or it’s just not something that interests them. On top of that, remember that if those you know aren’t necessarily interested in K-Pop, don’t always make it everything you discuss. Liking K-Pop shouldn’t take up your entire personality. It’s okay to be excited about a comeback or a variety show appearance, but it’s important to know others may not be as excited as you.
Know When It’s Okay to Take a Break
Being a K-Pop fan also usually means being online a lot. Being online too much, though, can be mentally and emotionally draining. The most important advice I’ve given in Fan Advice this year is that it's more than okay to take a break and log out for a while if you need. Turning off social media can be a relief sometimes, and it can be helpful in staying away from negativity. Life happens, and the content your favorite idols release will still be there for you when you’re ready to return online.
2022 was a ride, but it’ll be exciting to see what 2023 will bring us in the K-Pop world!
