Moonbyul Captures Listeners with “C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap)”

Moonbyul is back with another solo release. C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap), her second single-album, consists of a pop-punk inspired title track of the same name and the slow, mellow B-side “My Moon”.

Moonbyul’s previous work as a solo artist has seen her take on pop-rock with “Eclipse” and retro hip-hop with “G999,” “C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap)” is no exception to her musical versatility. A fun, playful song, “C.I.T.T” is full of heavy pop-punk vibes that give the listener feelings of nostalgia—taking them back to the early 2000s sounds of Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus and the songs they released back in their Disney Channel days. It’s an entirely different sound to what we are used to from Moonbyul, with both her MAMAMOO and solo releases, and it is one that might take some time to get used to and enjoy. Just like actual cheese, you will likely either love or hate “C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap).”

The music video for “C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap)” takes us into a high school setting, with Moonbyul and her dancers portraying students in different scenarios. Just like the song, the visuals are fun, playful, and bright. Throughout the video, we get to see Moonbyul take on numerous aesthetics—all of which were seen in the teasers and photos on her Instagram page leading up to the single’s release.

While “C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap)” is uplifting and energetic, B-side “My Moon” takes us on a contrasting journey, providing us with a sweet, calm sound that would be perfect for a K-Drama OST. In “My Moon,” Moonbyul blesses our ears with her soft vocals as well as a surprising slow-rap section, showcasing her talents as a singer, rapper, and even a lyricist and composer as Moonbyul is credited as a writer for both “C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap)” and “My Moon” and a composer for the latter, too.

Overall, C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap) is a fun single-album that is completely unlike Moonbyul’s previous solo releases, which might result in both “C.I.T.T (Cheese in the Trap)” and “My Moon” not being to every K-Pop fan’s music taste. Regardless of this, it is nice to hear Moonbyul take on a new and exciting style of music to show how versatile she is as an artist. From pop, to rock, to R&B and hip-hop, and now pop-punk, what style of music can we expect from Moonbyul next?
