TXT Take On Heartbreak with minisode 2: Thursday's Child

TXT (Tomorrow x Together) have steadily made their mark as one of the top groups of the fourth generation of K-Pop. With over 1.46 million pre-orders, it's safe to say that their latest release, minisode 2: Thursday's Child, was highly anticipated. Much has changed in the nine months since the group's last release, The Chaos Chapter: FIGHT OR ESCAPE, and they have grown in many ways. minisode 2: Thursday's Child is a perfect example of this growth.

While the album opens with "Opening Sequence" and sets the tone for the sadness that comes with heartbreak, the lead track, "Good Boy Gone Bad," quickly changes the tone to anger. The song is a fusion of rock and hip-hop, making for a powerful sound that drives home the themes of loss. It's a dark, angst-filled track accompanied by an equally deep music video. The video is dark in its color scheme and scenes, as we see the members in graveyards, dark streets, and a striking opening scene of member Beomgyu being buried alive with trash bags and discarded flowers. The story of heartbreak and anger couldn't be more jarring, and TXT delivers this hurt-filled message in a way that captivates its listeners within the first few seconds of the song.

The rest of the album goes through the emotions that come with heartbreak differently. "Trust Fund Baby" is a solemn pop song filled with lyrics of comparison to those who have their dreams already achieved and, ultimately, how money and success affect love. It transitions to the acoustic R&B song "Lonely Boy (The tattoo on my ring finger)" performed by Yeonjun and Huening Kai. The track switches between Huening Kai's sweet vocals and Yeonjun's rap verses, with lyrics that talk about a tattoo left not only on the ring finger but also on the heart; left behind are the lonely traces of pain and cruelty that their ex-lover inflicted on them.

The album ends with "Thursday's Child Has Far To Go," an upbeat pop-synth track by the trio Soobin, Taehyun, and Beomgyu, who produced the song. With ‘80s retro elements, the song is a hopeful closer, one that sings of being broken up with on a Thursday, so the members have the opportunity to use the weekend to be sad and recover. The lyrics, "A smile that blooms from my tears/A moment that will unfold again/To tune with your eyes, go," drive home this theme, and we are left with a light at the end of the tunnel for our heartbroken members.

minisode 2: Thursday's Child showcases TXT's talents at telling a story through their music. The album also sees the majority of the members adding more writing and producing credits under their belt, making this album a true testament to their growth as artists.
