Rolling Quartz Talks Origins, Meaningful Lyrics and Passion for Anime at Otakon 2022

As their first overseas appearance, many were excited to see Rolling Quartz in person for the first time. We were super hyped as well, given that we’ve been fans of the girl band since their appearance in 2020. In addition to featuring on the stage on Friday, Rolling Quartz sat down with The Kraze and our other media colleagues for a press conference-style interview on Saturday to give us a bit more insight into their music and their personalities. Read on to learn about their off-stage hobbies, American foods they want to try, and favorite animes!

Q: What’s a song you’d like to cover in the future?

Jayoung: Right now we don’t have plans [or have decided] on a next cover song yet, but once there is a song that we all really like or we’re all really excited about then we will work on one.

Q: When you guys are not working on music, what do you do in your off time?

Yongeun: I like to stay in my home, lie down, and rest and watch TV.

Iree: Play video games or read [a] book while listening to music.

J: I love watching anime.

Hyunjung: I like working out and playing video games.

Arem: I just like spending time by myself.

Q: If you could collaborate with any other artist, who would it be and why?

J: We’ve had really good experiences with our senior artists that are in the field as well as with AleXa and other teams, but we're very, very open. So if any artist wants to collaborate with us, please contact us!

Q: If you had to pick a color to describe yourself, what would it be and why?

Y: My favorite color is white but fans really, really like my purple hair, so I’m starting to adapt to feeling like purple is my color.

I: My favorite color is black, and I feel like when everything is pitch black, there’s more room for imagination and possibilities of different things.

J: My favorite color is pink but it doesn’t really match my personality, so the color for my personality, yellow might be a closer match.

H: My favorite color is blue, but I feel I can express myself through a rainbow of colors.

A: I really like black and I feel like black makes other colors dirty.

Q: What are some American foods you want to try?**

J: Steak! Steak is delicious!

[Others chorus in agreement, chaos ensues as they all shout over each other on what they want to try]

All: Steak, burger, Five Guys!

H: I want to try American pizza.

J: American food is a bit spicy, so I want to have beer with it but can’t since I’m working.

I: I love American food.

Q: What song or album have you been listening to lately that you can recommend to fans?

A: Seo Taiji’s “Internet War.”

[They proceed to pull out their phones to try and decide on a song to recommend]

J: Julian Lage’s “Nocturne.”

Q: Is there any anime you would want to sing for and what’s your current favorite anime?***

J, visibly excited: Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, Haikyuu, Naruto, Inuyasha, My Hero Academia, Death Note, Jujutsu Kaisen!

Translator: anyone else?

A: She said all of them.

H: Detective Conan.

Q: What are your goals for the rest of 2022?

A: We are working on a new album, so releasing that, and we’d love to have another solo concert where [we] have the time and opportunity to meet fans.

As the interview continued, it became visibly clear as the girls became more comfortable despite the language barrier, and more and more of their personalities shined through. Huge thank you to the Rolling Quartz team for taking the time to speak with us and our other media colleagues during the convention!
