TEMPEST “Can’t Stop Shining” in First Group Comeback

Five months after their debut, TEMPEST is back with their first comeback! The septet made waves in the K-Pop world with their debut, gaining 18 million views on YouTube and garnering the group a large and growing fandom. With a playful and catchy debut track, many were curious to see the direction they would go with their first comeback.

“Can’t Stop Shining” does follow its predecessor in terms of upbeat and carefree youthfulness taking center stage of the concept, but this time with the addition of a soft boy aesthetic rather than the mischievous kid feel. The song has a very classic pop beat to match the bright concept. It’s catchy despite being somewhat generic, and I would say it’s a safe bet as a first comeback. With an acoustic guitar driving the beat and an overall upbeat pop melody, this track has the makings of a classic bop that will remain a favorite in the pop genre.

The video adds a bit more flavor to the overall concept and song, working to blend the previous concept with the latest one. The video opens with shots of the boys in a graffiti covered, messy room, likely a callback to the concept of “Bad News.” The sets slowly open up to bright, flower-covered rooms with sky blue taking over as the main color of the video, as if to shift from the mischievous aura to a totally pure and angelic feeling. In my opinion, the video makes the song pop even more, presenting the viewer with a beautiful color palette and new choreography. If the song on its own feels a little lackluster to you, the video helps add depth to the overall concept.
