JUST B Returns with the High-Energy “MEDUSA”
It’s been ten months since we’ve had an album from JUST B, but they’re finally back with a seven track album! After seeing them perform at this year’s Otakon, I fell for their talent and charm. The boys have been busy capturing hearts across the world on tour, and new fans now have some new music to check out from them. Note that member Sangwoo is not seen in the music video (he’s been on hiatus), but he is actively participating in promotions for the album.
Since their debut in 2021, JUST B has often released more rock-influenced title tracks that often tend to be more heavy. While the new title track “MEDUSA” has some subtle rock influences in the melody, it has a much more upbeat pop punk feel reminiscent of the 2000s. The most striking part of this song has to be the vocals, most notably in the chorus. Bain really shines in this song for that very reason. It wouldn’t be a rock influenced track without a prominent electric guitar solo, and there is a unique twist in the final verse that not only includes the solo, but a randomly autotuned portion of vocals before going into the final chorus.
The concept of the music video is an interesting choice, especially given the upbeat feel of the song and the lyrics. The video depicts a dystopian situation where the boys can’t find any water, and showcases them in a scorching desert in what appears to be the American southwest. There are additionally some shots in a city. I do find the styling for the desert settings particularly striking, with bold reds and blacks in tactical gear being the main focus. I think the contrasting styling with a harder edge contrasting the softer song is particularly reminiscent of the pop punk movement.
JUST B is a group that is overflowing with talent, and if you’re a fan of rock-influenced music in any capacity then you will enjoy what they have to offer. While “MEDUSA” is a bit lighter than previous releases, it is still particularly catchy and showcases a different style for the group. Check out the music video for “MEDUSA” below!
