Rolling Quartz Stands “Fearless” in Third Single Album
Rolling Quartz, an all-female K-Indie rock band, released their third single album Fearless on September 20, 2023. The group’s lineup features Arem on bass, Hyunjung and Iree on guitar, Jayoung on vocals, and Youngeun on drums. As the merger of the band Rose Quartz and the duo Rolling Girlz, Rolling Quartz debuted on December 30, 2020 under Rolling Star Entertainment.
Though the pandemic temporarily halted in-person events, the group has since performed in their home of South Korea, of course, but also in North America. Fearless released following the group’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Paradise tour in America this May, and a performance at the Toronto Korean Festival 2023 in Canada this summer.
Rolling Quartz’s Message in “Fearless”
In “Fearless,” Rolling Quartz portrays a confident image against harmful words. Hateful perspectives cannot be changed, yet Rolling Quartz welcomes such attention with its opening, “So dirty guy, don’t flatter yourself / I’m laughing at your foolish thoughts.” They fight back against the negative energy with an unbothered attitude. “Shutdown, it’s just the beginning, hater hater hater,” another lyric says, taunting those whose words fail to hurt them.*
The simple music video backing the song does its job by highlighting the energy of the group: the black set with water across the floor makes the later instrument solos feel more grand. Paired with the transition into rain, the usage of water elevates the final chorus’s impact with a full unbothered image. The band’s vibrant hair colors also add to the intense jamming session. The shades of red, blue, blonde, and purple fill the room by whipping around while the members wear serious expressions — or in Iree’s case, a signature wide grin. They look especially tough and cool during the closing scene.
Rolling Quartz’s Next Steps
Debuting and managing during the pandemic is no easy feat — especially for an all-female rock band in an often male-dominated genre. Rolling Quartz is one female band in the industry drumming up some interesting tunes. From Blaze to Fearless, this band’s small but fun discography contains many jaw-dropping tracks to rock out to.
For those needing more Rolling Quartz in their lives, never fear: fans all over the world can prepare for many upcoming events. This week, the physical album for Fearless comes out on October 6, and Korean fans can look forward to Rolling Quartz’s in-person Hongdae concert on October 8. European fans can anticipate their EU Tour 2024 planned for January and February.
