Who Will Win the Girl in BXB’s Debut “Fly Away?”
BXB (which stands for Boy By Brush) are a five-member group formed by Wolfburn and APR Entertainment. The group was formerly known as the APR PROJECT, and you may recognize four of the members from the recently disbanded group TRCNG. Despite the change in agency and name, the message stays the same: showing youth in its natural form and life experiences through music and imagery.
From left to right, we introduce “Bolmaejal” Siwoo (볼매잘: the more you look at him, the more handsome he becomes), “Sloth” Hyunwoo, “Siberian Husky” Hamin, maknae June (who is not a former member of TRCNG), and “Honey Face” Jihun.
The group debuted on January 30, 2023 with pop-rock track “Fly Away,” written and produced by April, Jiwon Kang, and BXB’s own Hyunwoo and Siwoo. The title song is the only one to appear on their first mini-album Intro: Flight and a new beginning, released on the same date.
Is it a sad love story or is there a happy ending? The beginning and end scene imagine the group on the school’s roof with their girl friend, but could this represent the song’s title “Fly Away?” The school-boy concept shows the members’ daily activities affected by their feelings over their close female friend, like messing up a drink order at work or losing their aim playing baseball.
When the members all wake up one morning after having the same dream of confessing, they decide enough is enough as they listen to their hearts. Despite being nervous and wanting to back down, they make a play to confess, though anger strikes as they discover each other’s intentions and take out each other’s betrayal on boxing. However, their adrenaline never ceases, and when they see their grades start to fail and Hamin confesses to the girl with a hopeless Jihun looking away from the scene, they resort to violence.
We have to wonder, however, if the members making up, drawing on the board, doing pranks, playing the zero game, lighting sparklers at night, and even having snowball fights are all scenes between the violence or just happy memories.
Toward the end, the members run through the school in competition, but who will reach the girl first? We see their final lineup before the scene cuts to the roof again, the group smiling and holding each other. It’s difficult to make out at the end, but could it be that Siwoo won the girl’s heart as he holds her close? Or does it mean they decided to stay friends? Did she reject them? Maybe the fights were pure imagination and they chose not to act on their feelings. It’s open to interpretation, so what do you think?
