BTS’ “Dynamite”
It's been two years since BTS took the world by storm when they performed their first full-English single “Dynamite” on the Grammy stage, making it their first solo performance on the award show and the first ever K-Pop group to achieve that. Three years after the release of their hit song, the seven member group achieved dreams they've had since their debut in 2013. From sold out arena residencies to seven Grammy nominations, let's take a look into what “Dynamite” brought for the group.
The Song
In the midst of the pandemic that shut down the world, BTS had to find ways to connect with their fans even after the year took away their sold out world tour. While the world went silent, BTS found ways to make some noise and that was the release of “Dynamite” on August 21, 2020. The disco-pop song brought a feeling of positivity in a year when people needed it the most. The song debuted No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 two weeks in a row before being bumped down to No.2 just for it to rise in the charts again three weeks later. The song brought BTS the achievement of having the most music show wins for a single song, breaking the previous record held by Shin Seunghoon; a total of 32 wins.
The Music Video
While the song itself broke records, so did the music video. The video received a whopping 10 million views after only 20 minutes. The colorful music video with pastel, disco-like sets made it an easy watch, and the catchy melody brought it all together. Starting the music video with a group shot in pastel outfits and a beautiful CGI pink sky brings all the anticipation needed to continue the easy watch. The music video continues with solo shots of members dancing and smiling and brings light to the viewers. Having a retro touch to the video ties in the sound of the song and concept behind it all. The video includes big set designs like the word “Disco” and sparkly lights behind the boys while they dance the famous moves that pay homage to old singers like Michael Jackson and many other disco pop artists. Currently sitting at a total of 1.6 billion views, the music video will definitely go down in BTS and K-Pop history.
Having an English single helped bring a wider audience to the group, but to their surprise it also brought them an achievement all artists hope to achieve, a Grammy nomination. Unfortunately for the group, the Grammy was lost but the group didn’t refrain from trying new sounds and continuing their goal to receive that trophy one day.
Since the release of “Dynamite,” the group has released two full albums, two more full english singles, and solo work after announcing their decision to place a temporary halt to group activities. While their fans, ARMY, await the return of the group in 2025, they celebrate the solo releases and the achievements BTS has met in their 10 years as a group.
