Say the Name, SEVENTEEN

It's been eight years since the debut of Pledis Entertainment’s 13-member group SEVENTEEN, and the years have been nothing but successful. Since the group just released their newest mini-album FML, let's learn more about the boys.

The 13 members debuted on May 26, 2015, with their first mini-album 17 CARAT, which included their debut single “Adore U.” The one unique thing about the group is how they are split into sub-units. Each gets to express their specialty through unit songs and performances. The teams are hip-hop, vocal, and performance.

Hip-Hop

The hip-hop team consists of S.Coups, Mingyu, Wonwoo, and Vernon. Through the team’s performances and unit songs, listeners get a taste of what the group has to offer but also what each individual holds as a skill set. My favorite song by the hip-hop team has to be “GAM3 BO1” because of their willingness to branch out and explore new sounds without hesitation. Sticking to the title, the song sounds very techno like a video game while still having the “swag” the team holds. All hip-hop unit members except S.Coups have released solo music that showcase their own talents, my favorite being “Black Eye” by Vernon (and yes I am a little biased).

Performance

There is no denying the dancing talents SEVENTEEN holds as a whole; however showcasing the strongest dancers in the performance unit is the best thing SEVENTEEN did. The performance team consists of Hoshi, The8, Jun, and Dino. My favorite performance by the team has to be the “MOONWALKER” performance from the Be The Sun tour. From shiny outfits to insanely talented moves, the performance team knows how to stun on stage. If you've never seen them perform, I would say the best introduction is the “13월의 춤” performance they released just two years after debut.

Vocal

This might be a little biased to say, but SEVENTEEN has some of the strongest vocals in K-Pop today, and the vocal team is the biggest example of it. The vocal team consists of Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, and Seungkwan. If you haven't heard the vocals these five boys hold, I think the best song to introduce you to them is “Pinwheel” because you get to experience what each member has to offer vocal-wise. Each member in the team has very flexible vocals, and a prime example is Joshua’s performance of “double take.” If you haven't heard it, prepare yourself, because it is beautiful.

SVT Leaders

If you've heard the song “Cheers,” then you've heard about the group's leaders. The SVT Leaders unit consists of Woozi, S.Coups, and Hoshi, and wow, you get the best of everything the group has to offer in just one go. After the release of “CHANGE UP,” CARATS were pleading for the unit to release a new song, and that's when we were blessed with “CHEERS.” The one thing SEVENTEEN and CARATS pride themselves on is the uniqueness of the group, and their music and the leaders songs are very prime examples of that.

While CARATS enjoy the release of the group’s tenth mini-album, new fans are starting to emerge themselves into their eight-year history. So if you are new here and want to know more in-depth about the skill sets each member has to offer, start with the units! Make sure to check out SEVENTEEN’s new single “Super” and stream FML.
