Artist Highlight: JIMIN
Being categorized as K-Pop's “it-boy” has been both glamorous and interesting for BTS member Jimin. Debuting as a part of the third generation of K-Pop on June 13, 2013, Jimin has had many trials and tribulations, but the one that remains true is his talent. From group music to his solo debut, his angelic voice is sure to make you feel safe. If you want to know a bit more about the insanely talented idol, this is the right place to start!
Since his debut, Jimin has used his talents so beautifully to create a perfect mixture between great lyrics and even better vocals. My favorite example of his diverse range is the song “The Truth Untold (feat. Steve Aoki).” This song is a part of the trilogy album Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’ and is performed excellently by the vocal unit. I think this song allows Jimin to showcase his true abilities, especially when it comes to the high notes that he’s shown to be comfortable hitting over the past 10 years. A special talent that Jimin holds is the ability to make listeners feel the emotions the lyrics convey through his vocals, and this song is the perfect example.
My favorite solo release by Jimin has to be “Lie.” Dancing and singing might be hard for many, but Jimin does it so effortlessly that if you had the ability to watch the performance live, you’d be left amazed. The song speaks of a lie that he seems to be living. For many years throughout his career, self-identity was something Jimin seemed to struggle with. But with the help of his music, he learned to find himself. Not only does the song sound like a plea for help, it also explains the need to find one’s true self. This song appeared on the Wings album, which seemed to be a turning point for the group and marked an era of self-discovery.
This past year, Jimin expanded his musical talents and released his first solo album FACE, which brought him many new opportunities and helped him break many records. My favorite song off the album has to be “Set Me Free, Pt.2” which was in hot discussion among K-Pop fandoms for the new sound he was experimenting with. However, I absolutely loved the fact that he stepped out of his comfort zone after the halt in group activities and ventured out into something he enjoyed making. While watching the music video, I noticed a sense of urgency to break free from something that was holding him back. Whether it be stereotypes of who he “should be” or from himself, the entire song and video were beautiful and helped listeners get a feel for the new era Jimin had stepped into.
While ARMYs wait on what’s next to come for Jimin and the rest of BTS, they continue to stream his album which continues his growth in the charts. If you were wondering on how to get started with Jimin and his music, I hope this helped guide you on the right path!
