Hwiyoung’s Musical Prowess Shines in Single “Drive5”
When you think of vocalists in SF9, the likes of Inseong and Rowoon come to the forefront. But in a group of nine members, there are bound to be times when some are outshined by others due to the sheer amount of talent in one group. Artists in each group are often pigeonholed into one role while having multi-talents, and in some cases we never get to experience all they have to offer. Luckily, with Hwiyoung’s new single “Drive5,” we get to see another side of the SF9 rapper.
Known best as the main rapper of SF9, Hwiyoung isn’t someone you’d think of when it comes to vocals, even as shifts have been made in group comebacks to cover missing members. I myself probably wouldn’t have realized how sweet of a voice he actually has if I hadn’t chosen to dive into his solo work. “Drive5” is a simple R&B influenced melody that is extremely catchy and opens with Hwiyoung singing before introducing a rap verse. Many artists are capable of at least a base level vocal talent, but the chorus of this song is what really blew me away. He sings in a higher register than he raps, and his distinct vocal flavor alongside the melody are so pleasing to my ears. Maybe it’s not as polished as the professional lead vocalists would be, but there’s something so raw and real about his voice that is unspeakably charming.
If you haven’t had the chance yet, give “Drive5” a listen below. I look forward to more solo releases from Hwiyoung in the near future.
