Minho asks “Stay for a night” in New Winter Single
SHINee’s Minho has certainly proven himself as a versatile artist, and to kick off a new year of music, he’s released R&B influenced single “Stay for a night.” While he’s known as the rapper of his group, in this release he is all vocals, lamenting the loneliness of the winter.
“Stay for a night” is a classic R&B track, which fits Minho’s vocals surprisingly well. The melancholy tone of the track feels fitting for the season, and the easygoing melody is comforting despite the blues-heavy lyrics. The track has a mature vibe to it, as if he’s reflecting on the ever-present loneliness that exists in adulthood, particularly when you’re single. He does a good job of articulating the yearning for companionship without it sounding particularly pathetic or sappy, so I find it to be a particularly accurate depiction of this emotion that isn’t overwhelming, but simply sits with you.
In the video we see Minho alone through the majority of the video, which is particularly striking when you see him alone on a subway train. When other people are featured in the shots, they are simply part of the background and not acknowledging him directly, which is a great visual representation of the songs’ meaning. The use of muted colors, darkness and a cloudy sky also further drive home the melancholy lyrics. Despite having an overall forlorn tone, there’s something comforting about Minho personifying this type of feeling so well, as if to comfort those that know exactly what he’s speaking about.
