LAY Returns to Korean Promotion with New Single “PSYCHIC”
Let’s be real here for a minute: EXO-L’s with a Chinese member bias have been in the trenches for years. The last time LAY performed on a Korean music show was during EXO’s “LOTTO” era in 2016, and the final album he participated in was Tempo in 2018. Currently he is the CEO of his own label, Zhang Yixing Studio, founded in 2015. Though he hasn’t been active on the Korean music scene, his own solo career in China has been thriving, and he’s been active in the western music scene as well.
His new single “PSYCHIC” was released both in English and Korean, showcasing his skills as a songwriter. LAY has been an active artist for over 10 years and “PSYCHIC” showcases this fact beautifully. The song is a catchy pop beat with light house influences in the melody. He’s released music in many different genres, but the driving beat of this track seems to very much fit his vocal style. His voice really does shine in this song, and it becomes sweeter with each listen. While the song itself has a fairly simple composition, LAY does a great job of elevating it and making it particularly catchy, as we’d expect from an artist of his caliber.
Performance has always been his highlight point, so the music show performances have been particularly eye-catching. The music video is obviously also going to highlight the choreography, and there are plenty of spaces in the track with no vocal lines to focus on the accompanying dance. The video has a surprising amount of special effects, but what I found the most enjoyable was how much he appeared to be enjoying himself while dancing. He’s always been a great performer, and has only honed that skill more as the years have gone on.
“PSYCHIC” brings out a fun and playful side to LAY that is enjoyable all around. If you haven’t seen his performances on Korean music shows yet, be sure to check out his stages on M!COUNTDOWN and Music Bank. We’re so happy to see LAY back on the Korean music scene!
