Solar Rocks a Variety of COLOURS in Second EP

Solar, the leader and main vocalist of MAMAMOO, has come back to end April with a splash of color. Her second EP COLOURS released on April 30. With this EP, Solar adds six new songs to her discography’s growing palette. COLOURS is Solar’s newest EP since 2022’s 容 : FACE, and her second music release of 2024 after January’s “Love Has Gone.”

Tracklist:

  1. “Colors”

  2. “But I”

  3. “Empty”

  4. “Honey Honey”

  5. “Easy Peasy”

  6. “Blue”

“But I”

As expected from Solar, the title track “But I” is a powerful showcase of the emotions she puts into her singing. The song gives the initial impression of a somber ballad, perhaps something tear-jerking. Instead, Solar converts sadness into rage and contempt towards a cold-hearted lover. With lyrics written by Solar, Kim Dohoon, and Lee Hoosang, “But I” deals with the fallout of an unamiable breakup. “I really hate you / Don’t act like you’re nice,” Solar sings in the chorus.

Backed by a band, Solar channels her inner rocker into “But I.” The music video shows Solar traversing a vast desert as she mourns this relationship. She drags along a coffin, eventually deciding to light it aflame as she lets go of the past. Like the intense instrumental, courtesy of Kim Dohoon, Lee Hoosang, and Jenabi, ZANYBROS’s vision for the “But I” music video matches the song’s atmosphere.

But There’s More in the B-Sides

COLOURS comes with five other tracks, many of which Solar composed and wrote lyrics for. Solar worked as the sole composer and lyricist for “Colors,” “Empty,” and “Easy Peasy.” Though Solar bears no production credits for the fourth track, “Honey Honey,” the song adds a sweetness to COLOURS. Not to be confused with 容 : FACE’s “HONEY,” this track is a collaborative effort between composers David Randolph, Alina Smith, Annalise Morelli, and lyricists SUNHEE (선희) and Na Jeongah (나정아).

Solar and Kim Dohoon co-wrote and co-composed the final track “Blues” together. In a recent Reddit “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) session, Solar noted she felt the proudest of “Blues” out of all the songs on the EP. COLOURS may end with “Blues,” but it hopefully wipes away the blues for many fans who eagerly awaited for another Solar solo release.
