Girl Group Soloists

Last week, I shared some of my favorite B-side releases from the solo activities of K-Pop boy group members. This week, the girls are in the spotlight, looking at some great B-side tracks from the solo work of K-Pop girl group members.

“Crown”- Seulgi

Red Velvet and Girls On Top member, Seulgi, released her debut solo mini-album 28 Reasons in 2022. This album produced some of the best and most unique-sounding tracks I’ve ever heard within K-Pop, each carrying a distinctive sound; some bordering more on the darker side of pop music. An incredible EP, it is the closing track “Crown” that stands out as my favorite B-side on 28 Reasons. Through its backdrop and Seulgi’s enticing vocal style, “Crown” emits a powerful and dramatic aura that I could imagine playing in a scene of a televised drama series, building up to some sort of climax and drama.

“SUNNY”- Sunmi

With a soft approach and distinctive style, the second track from Sunmi’s 2021 EP, 1/6, “SUNNY” radiates a calm and romantic tone that is perfect for the upcoming summer season. The former Wonder Girls member turned solo artist approached this track with a delicate vocal style, opening the song with sleek high notes that later drive a catchy chorus with lyrics that reference her name-“I’ll be your Sunmi, Sunmi / Under this sky we are sunny, sunny.”  The retro vibes of the song give it an extra touch of feel-good energy that you want to play on repeat on your best days.

“Pastel”- Wheein

From her 2022 EP WHEE, MAMAMOO vocalist Wheein delivers a blissful, laidback sound with “Pastel,” the EP’s fifth track. With Wheein’s soft, delicate vocals against the song's breezy and mellow beat, “Pastel” ignites a warm and gentle feeling that brings the listener to a place of calmness and relaxation. It’s a beautiful love song with a stunning sound and sweet lyrics that fans of Wheein and MAMAMOO will appreciate.
