Five Moments that Had Verrers Sighing at VERIVERY’s New York Fan Meet
If you had a chance to catch the New York stop of the 2024 VERIVERY U.S. “GO ON” Fanmeeting Tour June 14 at Racket, you were fortunate enough to see Gyehyeon, Yeonho, Yongseung, and Kangmin of VERIVERY make their team proud by killing every song and bringing the venue alive through their engagement, games and performances. The seven member group under Jellyfish Entertainment which include Dongheon, Hoyoung, Minchan are touring as four this time around and we hope that you were able to catch them at one of their stops as this tour was a real treat for VERRERs and K-Pop fans in general.
During our roundtable interview with them in May, Yongseung noted that they were “proud of our efforts that we have put in to deliver a complete performance despite the smaller lineup” and their efforts were proved and brought to fruition that night. Here to highlight five things and moments that made the night especially memorable.
The Vocals
It may be too much of a broad thing, but it can’t be helped. Though they’re known for their knife sharp choreography, VERIVERY is a strong vocal group and that was made definitely apparent that night. Though they could all belt out vocals, it was Yeonho in particular that stood out. With a puppy sweet demeanor that seemed a bit introverted, the depth of the sound of his voice was striking. This was more notable in the slower songs, whether it be the special stage of Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood” with Kangmin, or the group performance of “Wish U Were Here” or “With Us,” the deep power vocals came through making listeners realize how great his vocals are live.
The Cute Q&A
Though there were some interesting questions that came up, it was the fun cute questions that brought out the most fun expressions of the night. Yongseung and Kangmin picked the question on whether you put milk or cereal first when making a bowl, began a hilarious debate which ended with both noting that they both put cereal first, though respecting those who put milk first. Yeonho and Gyehyeon had their own share of cute questions. Asked what type of fruit they would be, they played on the Korean homonyms of “VERIVERY” vs “berryberry.” Yeonho chose an acai berry as his “berryberry” and Gyehyeon just played using “VERIVERY” as his “berryberry.” The laughter that ensued was adorable and refreshing.
The song “With Us”
For VERRER, “With Us” was one of the hopeful highlights during covid. The soundtrack is an OST from Itaewon Class which became a hit itself, not only for the show, but because it resonated for many of those struggling and feeling alone or isolated at that time. Singing it along with an entire room filled with VERRERs with VERIVERY gave a heartfelt reminder that all of us are really not alone at all ever. With a room filled with fellow fans that stand united singing with VERIVERY, the memory of the song and the moment fills the heart. Though there are other ballads that VERIVERY have done since that are especially strong, the timing of this song's release and the memories of where we were then make the song especially special.
The Encore that Wouldn’t End
With most shows there is a designated time and setlist, but what happens when you still have time left over and you don’t want to go. Well, you can always add on songs which is what VERIVERY decided to do. Stating that they had more time, they even took requests from the floor. With such strong vocals, there wasn’t a song they couldn’t sing live and they really didn’t need much preparation for any of it. With an encore if you’re lucky if you get three or four songs. An eight song encore (including a song that was sung twice) is hardly an encore, rather a second part of the concert itself. Singing “Alright!,” “Ring Ring Ring,” “G.B.T.B.,” “TRIGGER,” “Childhood,” “Alright! (again),” “Lay Back,” and ending with “Fine,” the guys really showed that they didn’t want the show to end at all. Giving everything they had until the end, engaging with fans, they truly made their ending an ending to remember.
VERIVERY’s energy and choreography
You can’t talk about VERIVERY without mentioning their choreography. Without some of their team, the overall effect wasn’t as dynamic as it’s been in the past, but it’s still remarkable that they didn’t miss a beat and that they were so able to adapt every group song to fit the four of them. Only those who have experienced them as seven felt anything missing, as the four were more than able to fill the stage and put on an amazing show. Their enthusiasm and energy filled any holes and just made you wish for more. You might wonder, if you haven’t seen them as a septet, if they’re so good live with four, how much better are they with seven. Those of us who witnessed their last tour know the answer, but for any fan seeing them for the first time, this is something to look forward to next time.
Thank you to VERIVERY, Jellyfish Entertainment, Studio Pav and Helix Publicity for giving us the opportunity to cover this show. We look forward to seeing VERIVERY again soon!
