Young Posse’s 3rd EP ATE THAT

The female K-Hip-Hop quintet’s latest release: a Grand Theft Auto themed EP. 

Young Posse leaned heavily into the 1990’s West Coast hip-hop sound on this EP with tracks “Loading…” and “ATE THAT.”

The title track is paired with an outlandish GTA-style music video, similar to the "XXL" music video from their second EP, which also features over-the-top greenscreen effects. In the video, the members steal the secret recipe from a donut shop and commit a successful money cake heist.

Like many of Young Posse’s songs, beat is king. The addictive beat of “ATE THAT” allows you to look past the absurdity of the lyrics and fall into the rhythm. 

The playfulness of their music videos is a key feature of Young Posse’s work. Unlike other K-Pop groups who use rap as an element of their songs, Young Posse prides themselves as a hip-hop group, leaning heavily into the American hip-hop style in both their songs and concepts. This young group of Korean artists have a clear drive to master the genre. 

Their third track “BANANAS” takes on the early 2000’s Atlanta snap music style, with fun lyrics and an energetic beat. The group slows it down in the jazz pop track “Umbrella,” which features the sound of light rain over the soft piano and vocals of the members.

Their last comeback “XXL” took a sample from 90’s K-Hip-Hop trio Seo Taiji and Boys iconic hit “Come Back Home.” Despite their age, Young Posse seems to have a genuine desire to make modern hip-hop hits with an old-school influence. As the group is barely a year into their career, the members have plenty of time to grow and develop their individual styles. As they expand their genres and concepts, Young Posse will be able to pay homage to many styles of hip-hop over their career, and might even revive the old-school hip-hop sound within the K-Pop industry.
