And finally, “Hang Around” is a lighter closing track, mixing pop and synth for a smooth ending.
"WITCH" AND THE CONCEPT OF DESTINY
This track is a blend of dark hip-hop and electronica. The music video features the members in a visually striking environment, depicting their fight against a mystical entity. The powerful choreography and smooth transitions reflect the complexity of the plot, where the members attempt to break the chains of a dystopian world. The symbolism of rebellion is omnipresent, reinforced by a dark aesthetic and captivating special effects, such as infinite mazes and contrasting outfits, symbolizing their opposition to totalitarian control. This track also highlights the members' unique talent, with brilliant vocal performances. The singers stand out with a smooth flow and creative lyrics with subtle nuances.
As a reminder, xikers (싸이커스) is a 10-member boy group. They debuted on March 30, 2023 with their first mini-album HOUSE OF TRICKY : Doorbell Ringing. Their name is a combination of “x” which represents coordinates and “hikers” which is about travelers through time and space, searching for coordinates and exploring various dimensions to find clues and answers.
The title “위치 (WITCH)” is a play on words between the English word “witch” and the romanized Korean word for location “위치.” In this universe, it seems that there is a data center (the location) that houses “coordinates” embedded in the members’ DNA. This concept of “coordinates” is essential to guide them in their choices, thus avoiding unnecessary decisions. The idea of using DNA as a data repository reinforces the idea of predestination or destiny in their journey, while keeping a touch of mystery and science fiction. Whether they try to deviate or escape, this place is considered a “virus” because they will always end up back where they started.
The group’s inspiration for incorporating this type of concept is likely rooted in Korean folklore, with influences like the dokkaebi, these playful mythical creatures capable of manipulating reality. These references help to ground the xikers’ story in both modern and traditional narratives, while also allowing them to stand out in the K-pop scene. The group explores themes around traveling to parallel realities, which play a crucial role in their quest for identity and freedom through choices already codified in their DNA.
XIKERS HAVE NO LACK OF AMBITION
xikers recently opened up about the inspiration they got from their elders ATEEZ’s performance at Coachella. The experience has reinforced their ambition to conquer international stages, and take their music to a new global level. Despite Junghoon’s injury, the group continues to promote with unwavering energy, proving their determination. At the same time, xikers also made their debut on the Japanese scene with their single “Tsuki (Lunatic),” confirming their ambition to establish themselves in several music markets. They continue to attract attention on the international scene, solidifying their place as one of the new groups to watch.
