Throwback Thursday: Amazing Covers Part 1

Something that many of us love about music is the inspiration that many get from it. From those inspirations, we get covers. It is always a joy to watch people do covers. In the world of K-Pop, we get to see fans cover our favorite songs and also get to watch idols cover songs from other idols. We get to see boy groups cover girl group songs and vice versa. Soloists are performing other soloists' songs. It is so much fun to see them take a known and loved song and watch how they perform it. So, let’s take it back and talk about some covers that are just so iconic.

Minhyuk (MONSTA X), Bambam  (GOT7/Soloist), Youngjae (B.A.P), and Minhyuk (BTOB) - “Bad Girl Good Girl” (Original by miss A)

Back in 2016, Minhyuk from MONSTA X, Bambam from GOT7/soloist, Youngjae from B.A.P, and Minhyuk from BTOB came together to create a cover we will never forget. Their cover was of the iconic debut from former JYP Entertainment girl group, miss A. Their song “Bad Girl Good Girl” is a well-known song amongst K-Pop stans, and these boys ate this song up. Seeing male idols cover girl group songs and stick to the choreography is always entertaining. While keeping to the feminine touches of the choreography, you can still see each of their own unique dancing styles. On this cover, these idols also sing. Changing the lyrics from bad girl good girl to bad boy good boy. They sound amazing together, and the way they harmonize sounds like they have been a group for years. It’s such an iconic cover that everyone needs to see.

BTS - “Perfect Man” (Original by SHINHWA)

On December 31, 2015, the MBCkpop YouTube account posted one of the best and one most well-known covers known in the K-Pop space. On that day, Big Hit Entertainment/HYBE mega boy group BTS appeared with their cover, “Perfect Man,” by former SM Entertainment boy group SHINHWA. This cover is full of energy, and the members truly put on a performance. While watching, you can’t help but notice how they incorporated their dancing styles into the cover. The BTS members are such amazing dancers, and you can’t take your eyes off each of them during this performance. They also sing during this cover. We know what amazing singers the members are, and they did not disappoint. This song's styling, concept, and R&B sound fit the members so well; they did a fantastic job with this cover.

LOONA - “Cherry Bomb” (Original by NCT 127)

On May 22, 2019, the iconic girl group LOONA dropped a video that many of us watch today in utter shock. On that day, those girls dropped their dance cover to SM Entertainment’s boy group NCT 127’s well-known title track, “Cherry Bomb.” This video rocked our worlds. “Cherry Bomb” has a very complex and challenging choreography, and watching LOONA, who are already phenomenal dancers, cover this with ease had us all hyped. The next year, LOONA would perform a cover of “Cherry Bomb,” including dancing and singing, at KCON:TACT 2020 SUMMER. Seeing the full cover come together did not disappoint. These girls brought the same intensity and hype to the performance. This cover will definitely go down in history as one to remember and we will never forget.

A.C.E - “Obsession” (Original by EXO)

In 2020, during quarantine, KCON was held online. During this time, we saw many excellent performances, one of which was a cover by a talented boy group named A.C.E. The cover they blessed us with was “Obsession” by SM Entertainment's boy group EXO. This cover had it all—the vocals, dancing, acting, and clothing. When the video starts, you see the A.C.E members in the same attire as EXO in the video, down to the hair and makeup. The members truly put their all into this performance. The dancing was striking and hit every beat, and their vocals made you feel like you were levitating. Each member got to shine with individual parts throughout the performance and showcase their talent. It is such a breathtaking performance. I recommend it for everyone to watch.
