Throwback Thursday: Rappers Stand Up Part 2
Welcome back to part two of Rappers Stand Up. As a hip-hop lover, finding these songs wasn’t challenging. The Korean music scene has so many amazing rappers that part one didn’t even scratch the surface. So, let’s take it back and talk about some songs that make us want to stand up, grab the mic, and sing along.
DPR Live - “To Myself”
On March 15, 2017, a well-known artist in the K-hip-hop scene, DPR Live, dropped his fantastic seven-song album, Coming to You Live. On this album are so many notable songs that it was hard to choose just one, but it all trickled down to one that we all know and love: “To Myself.” Once the song starts, you instantly sing along to the well-known lyrics. “DPR we gang gang (Gang gang). Rep it every day aye (Day eye). I ain’t feeling them fakes. They don’t entertain aye.” The moment the beat drops, you are swaying your head along with the beat. This is a track you can sing word for word, run it back, and do it again. It’s super addictive and shows the lyrical skills and the flow of DPR Live, proving why he is a favorite of so many.
NCT U - “Misfit”
On November 22, 2020, SM Entertainment mega boy group NCT dropped their album, NCT RESONANCE, Pt. 2 - The 2nd Album. This album is jam-packed. It is always a joy when all of NCT come together and create an album for us all to enjoy. On this album, the members Taeyong, Johnny, Mark, Hendery, Jeno, Yangyang, and former member Sungchan came together and dropped a rap banger. This song is explosive the moment it starts. Singing this song will make you feel like you can join the group. Your rapping skills have leveled up, and if you’re a real pro, tackling Mark’s iconic, fast-paced verse should be a piece of cake. Or if you’re like me, you try anyway. It’s a fun song and will instantly have you hyped.
LISA - “MONEY”
On September 10, 2021, BLACKPINK’s LISA dropped her hype, girl boss, legendary debut, LALISA- Single. On this day, we were given two songs that instantly make you feel like you are on top of the world. While we know the words to both tracks, there is just something about “MONEY.” If you ever needed a song that you could get up and dance to, this is the one. The combination of the horns, a drill beat, and heavy bass creates a beat that is just addictive. That’s not the only thing that will get stuck in your head. The choreography is one that many people know, and the lyrics will get stuck in your head the moment you hear, “Dollar bills, dollar bills. Watch it falling for me, I love the way that feels. Dollar bills, dollar bills. Keep on falling for me, I love the way it feels.” LISA really did her big one with this debut, and while singing along to this, you can’t help but feel the same.
