SUNMI Returns With Her First Full-Length Album, HEART MAID

After many single releases and three EPs, quirky soloist SUNMI has finally released her first full-length album, HEART MAID. A jam-packed album with 13 songs, SUNMI’s HEART MAID is an eccentric view into the sound of SUNMI.

The title track for the album is “CYNICAL.” A fun track that has an addictive beat. With a sort of retro sound, you can hear that ‘80s synth-inspiration that makes this a groovy song. SUNMI is known for that quirky, kind of spooky sound that she has, and in this track, there is sort of this eerie sound that draws you in and has you hooked to the track instantly. Matching the mysterious sound she is going for, SUNMI's voice complements the tone of the instrumental. With a more monotone tone and hitting more of her notes on a minor scale, it creates a more spooky sound for the ‘80s instrumental that we have. Being predominantly in English, SUNMI has a lot of memorable lyrics that are bound to get stuck in your head. “Why so cynical, cynical, cynical. Just relax, why that face? Why so cynical, cynical, cynical.” It’s an addictive track that is extremely fun to listen to.
The music video perfectly captures the haunting vibe she was going for. Like many SUNMI videos, a story is being told. Watching SUNMI's life as a ghost was very interesting. The way she transitions into different scenes and interacts with the various characters shows the perspective of a ghost. The white hospital gown she wears is a cool contrast to the red fit that she wears in the video as well. Something that stood out in the video was the choreography. The dance is eerie. The way SUNMI and the backup dancers swing their arms, but then quickly move back to sharp moves, adds a spooky, uncanny visual to the song, which is fascinating.
