Since its release last month, Netflix’s animated movie KPop Demon Hunters has taken the world by storm. From the songs charting at record breaking numbers to constant radio plays across the globe (especially with the song “Golden”) to official and non-official merchandise being sold in stores and online, KPop Demon Hunters is everywhere!
By now, you would have heard all of the songs from the soundtrack (even going as far as knowing every song word by word), but do you know any songs from the singing voices behind Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, otherwise known as the three members of HUNTR/X? Whether your answer is a yes or a no, this week's B-sides will take a look at some songs from these three incredible artists for you to listen to alongside your KPop Demon Hunters OST fix.
“Take it slow” -EJAE
Singer-songwriter and producer EJAE lends her phenomenal vocals to KPop Demon Hunters as the singing voice for HUNTR/X leader and main vocalist, Rumi. Outside of KPop Demon Hunters, EJAE has written songs for many well-known idol groups, such as TWICE and Red Velvet, and has sung OSTs for a few K-Dramas, with the song “Take it slow,” from the 2019 K-Drama Woman of 9.9 Billion being one of them.
With a guitar-focused arrangement, “Take it slow” emits a calm, country-pop-ballad vibe with a dulcet and expressive vocal approach from EJAE. Like the music in KPop Demon Hunters, “Take it slow” showcases EJAE's breathtaking vocal range, with EJAE drifting between soothing, deep tones and heavenly, high notes, leaving listeners with a need to hear more music from her as a solo artist.
“What About Me?” - Audrey Nuna
Outside of KPop Demon Hunters, Audrey Nuna makes songs that sound as fierce and rebellious as her KPop Demon Hunter's character, Mira, acts in the movie.
From her 2024 album, TRENCH, the single “What About Me?” showcases Audrey Nuna's distinctive and edgy style, playing with a downbeat, electronic, R&B-rap production that sounds nothing like the songs of KPop Demon Hunters. Listening to “What About Me?,” and hearing the style in which Audrey Nuna performs the song, I am sometimes reminded of BIBI and the type of music she creates. The more I listen to the song, the more I want to hear a collaboration from these two amazing artists some day. Just imagine how incredible the song and the concept would be!
“yellow tape” - REI AMI
With gritty productions and mature, explicit lyrics, REI AMI's music vastly differs from the songs she features on in KPop Demon Hunters as the sweet, energetic, Zoey.
From her 2023 EP, shhh, the third track “yellow tape” stands out with its dark, edgy, and distorted pop sound, with REI AMI's music always bringing a distinctive and experimental sound that immediately lures you into her world. Although experimental (which usually adds a slight futuristic aspect), there is something quite nostalgic about “yellow tape,” with the song emitting a late ‘00s to 2010s pop vibe and also consisting of a Lady Gaga-esque presence in its chorus. REI AMI's music is a must-listen for those who enjoy alternative and dark pop concepts.
