Femme Fatale, Weki Meki

Weki Meki is back with their first single album after seven months with a brand new (and totally awesome) concept! The girls have traded in their youthful schoolgirl look for the mature, bad girl concept, and we’re totally not complaining. Single album Kiss, Kicks features three new tracks: title “Crush” and two B-sides “True Valentine” and “Dear.”

Visually, the music video for “Crush” is everything we’ve ever wanted (perhaps we are a little biased towards the bad girl concepts). The video begins with popular member Doyeon absolutely slaying as she gets onto a motorcycle, and gradually shows the other members doing traditionally masculine jobs (Suyeon as a hacker, Sei and Elly messing with guns and heavy weights, Yoojung at a shooting range, Lucy working on a car, just to name a few). Black and hot pink are the main colors used in the video to complement the concept. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen a straight up badass lady concept from a girl group, so it’s very refreshing to see Weki Meki nail it for once!

Musically, the song is more traditional and fitting for a cute concept, but it still somehow works with the visual concept, even if it has less of an edge to it. The chorus is heavily EDM influenced, while the verses have more of a hip-hop feel, creating an interesting mix of genres within the song. It’s different from Weki Meki’s previous title releases, which tend to be more eclectic and intense than “Crush.” Still, it’s a fairly strong title for the group.

The two additional tracks are an interesting mix of hip-hop and soft R&B, with “True Valentine” sounding something more along the lines of “La La La” and “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend,” and “Dear.” being a softer, vocal-focused track that is a perfect fit for the fall season. We personally like the contrast between all three tracks on Kiss, Kicks, and prefer it to the last album release from the group that lacked a diverse musical sound throughout the album.

Kiss, Kicks is definitely an album worth a listen, and “Crush” is a great music video both for concept and general cinematography. If you’ve been overlooking Weki Meki until now, it’s time to give this group your attention!
