To think that the same group that released “Hot Potato” would come back with a mature, angsty track is pretty much beyond what I expected at all. However, that is exactly the sound N.Flying seems to be going for with their latest release “Like A Flower.” Ever since the addition of Yoo Hweseung as a vocalist to the group, their releases have been quite fun and overflowing with unique quirky energy. With the first addition to their Fly High Project, they’ve unlocked a more rugged, angsty side to them that is alluring in a very different way.

Coming back with a melancholic bang, N.Flying have kicked off their new Fly High Project, a year-long venture which will see them releasing new content, busking, and holding concerts every two months, all of which they will play a part in the planning and production of. While aimed at introducing their music to new listeners, fans can look forward to being very well fed throughout the year. In harmony with the cool autumn breeze and warm orange shades, “Like A Flower” is a ballad with an emotional, melancholic melody. The track reflects the bittersweet emotions felt upon looking back at one’s youth and comparing it to the fragile beauty of a flower. The stripped-down instrumentals and post production allow the voices of the main vocalists to truly shine through. Speaking of which, the blend between Yoo Hweseung’s light, airy voice and Lee Seunghyub’s deep, soulful one truly sends you to a dimension of perfect contrasts.

The music video, much like the instrumentals, is toned down to allow all the focus to be on the vocals and the lyrics. Despite being pretty simple, the music video still takes you through a visual journey with the beautiful solo shots of the members and the transition of tones from black and white to color. Instead of being their usual silly selves, the members have chosen to stand behind the mic and put everything they have into delivering the raw emotion of the lyrics and carrying out those beautifully executed high notes. It shows that they don’t need to have a lot happening in the music video, but purely standing behind a mic and singing their hearts out showcases the raw talent present within the group.

While this could arguably be better suited as a final “come down” track, I think “Like A Flower” leads us into the project with just the right amount of tension. Perfectly timed to match the season of ballads, the strong vocals and sharp instrumentals keep it from being too sappy and losing your attention. The music video holds a lot of cinematic appeal, while at the same time being stripped down enough to focus on the vocals and emotions expressed by the members. “Like A Flower” leaves you with a lingering nostalgic feeling and craving for more, which is a good thing since N.Flying has only just begun, with a lot more to come.
