K-Pop Conversion Stage 3: The Legends

The K-Pop community continues to grow, reaching as far as the other side of the world. With more acts breaking into the Western music scene, audiences are increasingly becoming aware of K-Pop, and rapidly showing interest. Time and time again, this specific formula concerned with dragging others into the hype of the Hallyu Wave has proven totally successful. For week three, it’s time to dive into the legendary releases that brought K-Pop into the limelight.

“Fantastic Baby” - BIGBANG

Standing at an astounding 349 million views on YouTube, BIGBANG’s “Fantastic Baby” comes in second only to PSY’s “Gangnam Style” when it comes to early K-Pop recognition. Westerners had difficulty fathoming the eccentric aesthetics of the video, which seemed even more far-fetched than “Gangnam Style” at first, but after they get past the initial shock, your chosen victim will no doubt be completely unable to get “Fantastic Baby” out of their head for weeks. I mean, after all, there is a reason the song has so many hits on YouTube.

“Sorry, Sorry” - Super Junior

Super Junior makes a habit of being present constantly in the K-Pop world with their unforgettable bops, and it’s impossible to immerse another in the Hallyu Wave without a familiarity with “Sorry, Sorry.” For starters, every group and their mothers has covered the dance at some point, and even nearly 10 years later you will get a crowd covering the dance as soon as the first note of the song is played.

“Mirotic” - TVXQ!

By now your chosen target is far enough into their curiosity for K-Pop that it’s time to bring out the big guns: the most legendary of all sexy anthems, TVXQ!’s “Mirotic.” This song is an excellent choice for phases one and two as well, but it’s definitely a staple of phase three because of its notoriety. Plus, Changmin rising out of the water dripping wet is guaranteed to convert anyone with working eyes, just sayin’.

“I Am the Best” - 2NE1

Third in line for views on YouTube behind the two previously mentioned, 2NE1’s “I Am the Best” initially became famous because of its use in a Microsoft commercial in the West. The music video has the same shock factor as “Fantastic Baby” with a slightly different angle, and the song has the same contagious catchiness as well. 2NE1’s impact on the industry is definitely something to be highlighted, which is why they make the legendary list in stage three.

“I Got A Boy” - Girls’ Generation

Another legendary girl group that your target has probably heard the name of is Girls’ Generation, and they probably also recognize the beat of “I Got a Boy.” The song went viral and was heard just about everywhere, and for good reason. Girls’ Generation has plenty of legendary songs to bring attention to, but “I Got A Boy” may prove to be the most effective one of all with its addictive beats and stunning visuals.
